Proto Man leads Mega Man 9 DLC

First round of downloadable content for Capcom's 8-bit revival includes Endless Attack mode, Blue Bomber's forerunner; WiiWare today, PSN/360 this week.

Depending on any given gamer's platform of preference, Mega Man 9 has been available for purchase on all three current-generation consoles for up to two weeks. Working with robot-like efficiency, though, Capcom said today that it already has the first wave of downloadable content ready to go.

The Mega Man 9 DLC is available today for the WiiWare edition of the game, with the Xbox Live pack out tomorrow and the PlayStation Network download following on Thursday. Taking top billing from the DLC is the new Proto Man mode, which lets gamers swap out the Blue Bomber for his titular prototype.

Proto Man's abilities vary from Mega Man's. Proto Man packs the charge shot and powerslide abilities and wields a shot-reflecting shield. Balancing out his pros, Proto Man takes double the damage of Mega Man and is knocked back twice as far when hit. Capcom notes that there is no story mode for Proto Man, and he cannot be used with ranking or challenge modes.

Mega Man 9 gamers will also be able to download the Endless Attack mode this week. Not to belie the name, Endless Attack mode is a competitive stage that has no set end. Gamers compete to see who can make it the farthest, and the results are logged on the game's rankings page.

Capcom had not revealed pricing information for either content pack as of press time. For more on Mega Man 9, check out GameSpot's review.

I don't believe the amount of whining that appears on Gamespot.

Mega Man 9 was a great game. It was also incredibly cheap. They could have released it on one of the handhelds and easily charged a full $40 or $50 for it. Instead, they released it more conventionally, and it cost $10. You guys would've bought it for $40 on the DS. Instead, you're badword-ing that it's costing you $5 on top of the $10. They could release five more download packs like this, bringing it up to a round $40, before I'm going to complain.

Yes, they're just milking the game for profit. But surely, that shouldn't matter. Every game company milks for profits. The difference is that this is still cheaper than they could've done.

What sucks about this DLC is that you can't use Proto Man to unlock any achievements on the 360 or any of the in-game challenges...but that doesn't stop it from being a good download. I guess that's why its DLC and not a part of the original game...it adds more to the game, but you don't necessarily miss out on anything just because its not there.

You use $1-3 when you tip people at restaurants or bars? How is that any different? At least you get to KEEP something. Come on people, get a job if the prices are too high.

In 1988, just to clarify, all NES game at all retail outlets where $42.99, because of Nintendo's price-setting/cart-dumping tactic at the time, because Sega, Atari and INTV's carts were between $49.99 and $59.99 depending on the game and store bought. Nintendo was sued by the Justice Department and Justice Departments of several States in 1991. The novel "Rising Sun" has a one-sentence blub about this case, and it's actually documented in law schools across the Nation, so with a lil' digging it can be found for research. The results were simple: Nintendo would allow two $5 coupons to go out to consumers to the States that sued them, and also stop cart-dumping and restore their prices to a competitive edge, i.e. $49.99 or there abouts. That's why post-1991, all carts for the 16-bit consoles where around $50 or so, with some going higher.

As for the complaints, while I do agree a game ought to be finished when released, or any software/product for that matter, the downloadable content in this case isn't a requirement to play, it's an option. The user chooses to buy the content, like those old D! Zone expansions for the original DOOM back in 1995. It's not like you're going to have the full game upon purchase. The dude who wrote about coffee hit it dead on.

Both DOOM (commercial version) and Mega Man 9 are fully complete, it's your choice to buy the content or not.

    @zeke2040:
You can't get this game for the NES. It's a brand new game. Capcom just used NES graphics to make the game.

It is interesting to see what when it is a game that is popular that all of the sudden DLC that comes out so close to release gets praise instead of constant insults of "why wasn't it in there in the first place?!"

    This is a DLC cash-in to a "9th times the charm" cash-in.

why are people shouting scam? If this game was released for £40 no one would complain.

It's not the price that's bugging me, it's the fact that we have to download Protoman instead of making him a cool unlockable in-game.

To everyone whining about how DLC costs money... think of it like a coffee. Yes, you can pay for your basic coffee. But you want other stuff in it, they're going to charge you for it. You want the other stuff, pay for it. You don't, then don't. It's your choice.

considering that the price of games hasn't inflated like everything else, i don't think paying for DLC is so bad. do ya'll realize that twenty years ago, NES games cost like $50? now PS3 games only cost like $60. I think Ocarina of Time cost like $70 when it came out, didn't it? I'm amazed that the price of games hasn't skyrocketed like everything else has.
