TGS 06: Resistance: Fall of Man Multiplayer Hands-On

We team up with the Japanese in an online battle from the floor of the Tokyo Game Show.

TOKYO--You have to look around a bit or you just might miss Resistance: Fall of Man at Tokyo Game Show 2006. The game is hiding on the back side of Sony's booth, and it's broken up into a single-player section and a multiplayer section. We hopped in line and waited our turn to get into an online battle, and so far, it looks like the game's multiplayer mode could be pretty exciting.

Much like the single-player mode, the mode we played pit the insidious alien creatures against human soldiers. Our kiosk dropped us in with the alien team. The alien soldiers have a time-limited ability that lets you move more quickly and see opponents through walls. Other than that, you can jump, execute a melee attack, fire, toss grenades--all of the stuff you'd expect to see in a first-person shooter.

The multiplayer match supports up to 40 players, and the mode we played was a 10-minute team mode that uses Battlefield-like control points to manage spawning. The control points are large columns with smaller colored cylinders inside that correspond to the color of your team. If you control the point, you can spawn there when you die. If you roll up on an enemy point, you can shoot out all of the colored cylinders to take control.

The multiplayer game moves pretty quickly, and things speed up even more when you're using the alien's fast-moving ability, which can be handy if you want to sneak up and bash a human in the skull with the back end of your shotgun. Despite having a large 40-player limit, the size of the map we played in wasn't huge. This kept things moving and kept the level of action pretty high.

Overall, the multiplayer component of Resistance seems cool--even though our alien team lost the battle to those pesky humans. Resistance: Fall of Man is scheduled to be released alongside the PS3 in both Japan and the US.

I wonder it it will be better than UT 2007. They won't be better than a PC version, though!

This game could do for PS3 what Halo did for Xbox. Thats sell them. A Triple A title at launch can only be good for a console. Insomniac have gone all out on this one and you can see it. I cant believe people who like the knock the PS3 still use the old "Theres no games on it". This game is nothing but quality.

And everyone stop comparing it to gears of war. They are two different games and both will be great. And I'll have them both.

If I could afford a PS3, Resistance would be the first game I'd buy.

Resistance: Fall of Man runs at 30fps, not 60fps. It's in an article in a magazine I read. The reason for this is that, to fit 40 instead of 32 players and to have more particle effects and destructible environments, they needed to scale it down from 60fps to 30fps.

As for the graphics, they're not going to be as good as the Unreal Engine because the Unreal Engine has been worked on for longer than the one used for Resistance. Of course, the PS3 dev kits come with the Unreal Engine, so Resistance could have used it, but didn't. Money and all that. Anyway, games that are exclusive to the PS3 in later years will look better than anything on 360, not to sound like a fanboy, I want, and will have, both systems.

Halo is still my favorite FPS next to Unreal. Unreal has better multiplayer but Halo has a great campaign and story, in my opinion. Resistance has a somewhat interesting story, but I'm going to get it for the weapons and gameplay. All in all, it's going to be fun.

60 bucks is still kinda pricey when the console costs 6 bills.

Games are priced at $59.99 not the $78-$85 japanese conversion figure floating around on the net. If more people would read they would see that those japanese prices are the same as the 360 games in Japan so the reasonable inference would have been that games would cost the same as the 360 in the U.S. but hell "PS3 games to cost $85" makes a better headline.
