Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War Hands-On

Koei's upcoming action game brings history to life…and death.

Between the lines of every history book are thousands of forgotten battles and unsung skirmishes. In other words, all the good stuff. But don't fret, because Koei is going to fill you in on the gory details of one of civilization's bloodiest, most action-packed conflicts in their upcoming game Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War.

If you slept through that unit in school, all you need to know is that England and France were at war for half of the 14th and 15th centuries. Although the conflict spawned legends like Joan of Arc and Prince Edward, it was hard on the normal, mortal folk whose populations were decimated by losses. That's where you come in. As a mercenary commander, you'll control forces for hire as you attempt to become rich off one of the most expensive periods in European history.

On a conceptual level, Bladestorm has a lot in common with Koei's flagship franchise, Dynasty Warriors. You're a hero capturing strategic locations on a giant map as a huge battle rages around you. But instead of running amok as a one-man army, you'll be able to take control of an entire band of mercenaries. When a battle begins, you'll pick a base and spawn in. As you look around, you'll notice several different groups of soldiers, such as cavalry, crossbowmen, and infantry loitering about. To assume command of a group, you simply approach and press a button.

Once the squad is under your command, they'll basically follow you everywhere and do whatever you do. In turn, you assume the qualities of whichever squad you just commandeered. Let's say you grab a gaggle of crossbowmen. You'll want to run within range of a skirmish, and then tell your guys to fire away. We tried this, and after filling a few enemies with bolts, we started following a band of marauding cavalry. These guys would storm through infantry, skewering them with lances, and as soon as they were clear we'd let loose on the survivors with volleys of lethal bolts. It was fun and cool to see how these two unit types worked so well together.

In spite of our combined brutality against hapless infantry, we weren't doing much to change the battle lines or advance our cause. We needed to capture a base, which meant defeating its leader. Once we found one, we quickly parked our bowmen and ordered them to fill him full of holes. Fortunately, we saw him quickly shred another unit of bowmen with his wicked long sword, so we abandoned control of the bowmen and changed to cavalry. From there, we repeatedly ran him down, keeping him off his feet and giving the remaining bowmen easy shots. He was tough and took long to kill, but after getting trampled a dozen times, and being shot a couple hundred more, he finally succumbed to his wounds, falling through the cracks of history.

Although we didn't see much of the game's story unfold, we were pleased to see some role-playing elements on display, including our character's fame rating, which would allow us to eventually command more powerful units. We were also pleased to see Bladestorm running smoothly despite entire armies clashing onscreen. Unlike Dynasty Warriors, it looks somewhat realistic.

Although it's hard to predict how Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War will ultimately go down in history, we think it has a bright future. It places you right in the thick of a huge battle among autonomous, seemingly intelligent forces, and allows you to play several different, interesting rolls on your way to fame, fortune, and legend. Look for more on this war when it lands on American shores in the fourth quarter of 2007.

I've been waiting for this game and it looks like koei's best game yet.

This is one of the games I want most this year... but I'm still not sure if it's going to be good or not.

I agree with it being total crap having to re-unlock all of those characters I already spent so many hours unlocking in the original games, but that's why you get a codebreakers or an action replay. Also it looks like Bladestorm is going to be more like Kessen 3 where you control a group of soldiers in a realtime action game as opposed to just the one in the DW and SW series.

Well, as a friend of mine once told me, people LIKE familiar gameplay. This is why every Musou game that Koei poops out is a carbon copy of the proceeding game every single time. Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish for something MORE than their little tweaks in each subsequent release.

    In fact, even though Musou/Warriors Orochi had pretty much the same gameplay as almost all the DW and SW games to date, it still kicked DW5's ass in terms of fun factor BECAUSE it had sparkling new elements like the weapons fusion system and the fact that you can have a 3-person party (well, sort of). I just wish it didn't require you to get every freakin' character before maxing out certain equipable stat modifiers like Increase Life and all. 9_9;

But wait -- isn't Bladestorm supposed to be more like the Kessen series than the Musou/Warriors stuff? D:

i agree with edhead1158 the may be similar but all the great companies copy a game they already made and they make improvements and either way there are a bunch of fans of koei so even if they make the same game people are buying it because its familar and a good product

You know, I'm getting sick of people saying how Koei's games are the same and it's a cheap way of making money off the same game. Why is it that Koei get's bad mouthed for doing this when EVERY game company does this. I mean, come on, are you going to sit there and tell me that EA makes completely new and unique games EVERY *****MN time? "Madden 2008 is totally different from Madden 2007, I mean there's a entirely new roster!" And a game about the Aztecs or the Mayans would be pretty good, as long as it's not about that Mel Gibson movie. I hope that you guys complain on the Rainbow Six forums about how all those Tom Clancey games are the same. If you don't like them that's fine just don't use the It's-the-same-game-as-Dynasty-Warriors-2 excuse because I'm sick of seeing it.

wjkflke, have you nothing better to do than to go on Ps3 boards and say that every game you see on the system is crap...

O great, next we will see Aztecs and Mayans fighting or something. When will this end? Why can't they just focus on making a ridiculously good and different DW game instead of spreading their resources.

it looks to me that Koei is just stamping out same style games with different settings. so just in case DW6 doesnt sell, the 13 other clones combined will...go cheap way to make money!

Whoa whoa, that was supposed to be read within the context of a group fighting the french on the English side. Looks like I should have been more clear. Thanks for the heads-up.

Can you ever control just one soldier and attack with him/her? I would assume so...

true i suppose the likelihood of a french person reading an article headed: "The Hundred Years War" is likely expecting to see some Brit on French action... still, they should be a bit more careful... i just dont want some french guy to bring out a wad of cash and starting making litigation problems for my fave game site...

after all with Iraq, its not like were all kosher with the french... might find some nutcase ultra-nationalist with too much money and pride...

think it looks like a fun game though... since when have graphics determined if a game is fun?... its not like the graphics are a throwback to 8bit gaming.... god people get greedy!

it wont be an A lister, but that doesnt mean that it is crap!

    ... "dirty francs"...
come on guys... didn't you realise that might be a little too inflammatory... if I was French id be seriously pissed off with that... imagine if a game review said something racist. Would that be tolerated... these aren't aliens like the chimera, you just insulted an entire culture... one far older than American 'culture'. (loosely applied)

You gotta think about the people reading this guys...

    not impressed

Seems very similar to Kingdom Under Fire with the controlling small armies and such... Dynasty Warriors was a repetitive game. I'm glad they took a new approach.
