What we heard: Less than a month before the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, leaked in-game footage of what appeared to be Ubisoft's Beyond Good & Evil 2 popped up on popular video-sharing Web site YouTube. The footage appeared to presage Ubisoft's blowout for the game, which was first announced as part of UbiDays in May 2008. However, such was not the case, as the game was conspicuously absent from Ubisoft's E3 presence.

It now appears as if Beyond Good & Evil 2 isn't just unready for primetime--it may not be happening at all. According to Gamersyde staff writer Colin Solal Cardo, Ubisoft confirmed to him that Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been placed on indefinite hold.

"I got confirmation at Cologne's Gamescom that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is on hold for now. No idea if it's def or temporary but it sucks," reads a post Cardo made to micro-blogging site Twitter.

Indeed, assuming the confirmation Cardo received is accurate, this wouldn't be the first time Ubisoft has distanced itself from its May 2008 announcement of Beyond Good & Evil 2. Speaking to IndustryGamers in July, Ubisoft North America executive director Laurent Detoc addressed the aforementioned leaked in-game footage, casting a substantial shade of doubt as to whether the game will see release.

"Whether or not [Beyond Good & Evil 2] comes out remains to be seen anyway, but we didn't want to abandon that IP because it has a cachet and authenticity about it," Detoc said. He later continued, "Well, I didn't say there's definitely going to be another game. I said something had leaked, which means we've been working on some Beyond Good & Evil stuff, but whether there's going to be another game or not, that's something for the future."

The official story: Ubisoft had not returned requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that Ubisoft is on the fence about reviving Beyond Good & Evil 2. Whether or not development has officially been suspended remains to be seen, however.

I never understood why BG&E didn't do better than it did. It was a fantastic game that never got a fair chance. I think we'll see a sequel eventually, it may just take far too long for our liking.

Like I said; I SERIOUSLY doubt ubisoft has the b@lls to cancel this game: Remember, Ancel has threatened to leave once before...

... And take the rights to their mascot with him.

@Cory929, I really hope that you are right because the first game was one of the best I've ever played.

Don't panic people it is confirmed bogus, maybe Gamespot should look for better sources next time (seriously, some blogger's twitter feed ?) because another french site (http://www.gamekult.com/articles/A0000079137/) has contacted Ubisoft, which has confirmed the game is still on track

Pointing out that this is old news has got me 6 thumbs down. I presume that means just because people haven't followed this story closely, like I have, I am wrong and they are right?

The development better not stop, or the ending of the first game will be a 'what the hell' ending. I always wondered what happened to that pig guy.

I played the original, and I can't see why any sane company would not make a sequel. That would just be stupid - throwing away money. The original was great - it was innovative, but not unreachable or unrecognizable. I believe it carved it's own piece of the game pie out, and it was good. It had combat, collection, exploration and puzzles - like a rebooted Zelda. I cannot see why Ubisoft would even consider not making the sequel - just moronic.

Ubisoft at least try to innovate a bit more than let's say companies such as EA or Activision. I'd say it would be pretty foolish on Ubisoft's behalf to not take this risk. Guess we'll have to wait it out.

Sadly, Battlesword, games that try to innovate and be different end up not selling because the safe and familiar repeats of existing genres are already well established and people can just ease right into them.

The idea of having a game that doesn't fit into a pre-existing genre pidgeonhole puts people off. What would you classify BG&E 1 as? Open world action stealth photo sim racing platformer? People are afraid to try new things, and it's bloody annoying listening to them whine about the lack of innovation in the games industry and then going back to play Gears of War or Call of Duty.
