EA banks Monopoly

Publisher flexes Hasbro license with family-focused business-tycoon game on 360, Wii, PS2, mobile, and online portal Pogo this fall.

As part of Atari's economic turmoil last year, the publisher in July sold Hasbro back its rights to make console, handheld, and online games based on its extensive line of toys and board games. Quickly capitalizing on that move, EA moved in on Hasbro, announcing in August that it had picked up the rights to Hasbro products that Atari had just sold.

In February, the first fruits of that union surfaced, with EA saying it would be making console and handheld casual games out of Littlest Pet Shop and Nerf N-Strike. At that time, the publisher also said that games based on Hasbro's arguably most recognized brands, Scrabble and Monopoly, were also in the works. True to its word, EA said today that it would adapt Hasbro's venerable capitalist-tycoon game for the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, mobile devices, and its online casual portal Pogo.com, with a release slated for this fall.

Hasbro's Monopoly is hardly a stranger to the interactive medium, having appeared on various gaming platforms dating back to the NES and beyond. The latest take on the game will be modeled after Hasbro's newest board game, Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition, and promises a "party twist" and faster gameplay as well as local multiplayer action for up to four. Players will also be tasked with various challenges and minigames to unlock new boards.

...or you could just...I dunno...buy the damn board game.

I'm glad to see the Wii technology being used to its fullest extent in this high octane rendition of Monopoly.

This is totally something EA would do...cheap money grab. What a pile of crap.

There is a reason why "Uno" was one of the most successful XBLA titles, it was fun, fairly inexpensive for most people, rather addicting, and quite simple. Yes, Monopoly is a more "detailed" game, but at $39.99, it may be too much for most people to shell out. I can see this being a 1600 MS points release at most via Arcade, but the jury is still out, who knows, it may be worth the $40 price tag as it gets closer to release.

if they were only 800 MS points i would consider Monopoly, surely EA wouldnt have the audacity to release them in stores (£30+).

Oh joy. Another really cruddy, basic, boring, "realistic" game from EA, makers of great...er...semi-fun mediocre games. Not looking foward to the amount of fail that'll come spewing forth from this tragedy.

EA would have to fail pretty hard to mess something as simple as this up.

right on lewis2112! I don't think Monopoly is as popular as it was when I was a child, so EA is gonna have to pitch higher if they want to score.

Ah.. I see that 'irony' has already lit up the board. Well, I can't miss my say, even if it's not original. Instead of 'Go to Jail', you'll be imprisoned in an EA retailer. Instead of 'bail' you'll have to buy an EA game to get out. Everybody will hope for doubles. Other than that, EA wont change much, except the 'Chance' cards. EA doesn't believe in taking chances. They'll be replaced with 'Sequel' cards. They're all the same card, really, they just have a different number after the title.

    TheRooskie says
"Thats what EA is going to have if it keeps buying out Companies and Licenses: a Monopoly." You are so right!

I can see it now Monopoly 'EA board editon' instead of Boardwalk as the most coveted it will be TakeTwo.......

If it's not a $10 game on XBLA, then I couldn't care less about it. EA is just trying to rip you off as much as humanly possible, what else is new.

Check Prices: $18.99 – 19.99
