2K Sports makes The BIGS

Creator of EA's MVP Baseball leads production of over-the-top MLB-licensed baseball title; Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, PSP game due next summer.

Toward the end of 2004, big-time game publishers went on a spending spree of sorts, attempting to gobble up exclusive rights to professional sports leagues. The big winner was Electronic Arts, which partnered with the NFL, NCAA Football, and the Arena Football League within months, effectively locking up licensed football. 2K Sports wasn't far behind, buying the rights to third-party MLB-licensed baseball games.

By shutting out competitors, the two publishers are free to control their respective markets and expand into new brands. EA used the opportunity to create the NFL Head Coach franchise, a strategic take on the NFL. Now, 2K Sports is branching out into its own new MLB-branded property but is going with brawn over brains.

The Take-Two Interactive subbrand today announced The BIGS, an over-the-top baseball game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable. The game is being developed by Vancouver-based Blue Castle Games and will be under the close watch of Dan Brady and Jason Leigh--two game vets who helped launch EA's MVP Baseball series. The BIGS takes the field in summer 2007.

In contrast to 2K Sports' MLB 2K baseball simulation series, The BIGS will feature more arcade-style play, including power-ups and "outrageous special effects." Online play, which wasn't detailed, will support up to four gamers.

For more information, read GameSpot's Q&A with producer Dan Brady.

god i hope it doesnt have stupid things in it like slugfest did. I hated that game so much, i want a baseball game that actually feels like a real game, not one that has power ups and stupid arcade crap! Why dont they fix the awful game they put out this year.

Instead of making another baseball game they should try to fix the one they have. How can you buy the rights to the MLB license to block out the competition and still not have the best MLB game out? They should fix that first. Also, why hire the guys that made The BEST baseball and use them to help with an arcadish type game? C'mon 2k.....you could easily take over the sports world if you can get a few more sports under you belt.

I always thought and was dissapointed that 2k should've bought the NFL rights and EA the MLB rights. Those were their strong points and now it's flip-flopped. Oh well, here's to NFL 2k5 and MVP 05. . .

Exactly...now that 2K got the lead gameplay guy from EA i have complete faith tthat 2K7 will be way better...I hated 2K6 so much i went out and bought a ps2 just to play MVP 05..but why make an extremem baseball game...this creativity could be used for an "arcade mode" in 2K7...since we all miss a great sim game...

Vancouver, Vancouver, Vancouver. I never thought my hometown was gonna be a hub for so much gaming and movies. It was never like this when i was a kid. Gotta love it when that happens, eh?

MVP was the best EA Sports game so I blamed 2K of obtaining exclusive MLB license. But now, since they changed the developer and started new MLB franchise, I'm really interested to it...

I wish they would make a pc version to. ever since they grabbed the right's pc gamers are without baseball except text versions from baseball mogul. if they are going to take the right's they could at least replace mvp baseball that no longer is possible because of 2k sports.

2K football was pretty good but the baseball games are not that great. I am still looking forward to it on the Wii.

MVP is still better than the horrible 2K baseball games. Now they're going after the recently deceased Slugfest games as well, but they won't suceed.

I hope the game itself is better than the title suggests. Also, how long before EA threatens to sue 2K over the simularity of "The Bigs" agains't "EA Sports BIG!"

I also thought Big Rigs when I first saw the headline.

Fine with me. I like most of the 2k sports better anyway. I just want to see something like Ken Griffey Jr's batter style (the 64 ones) at some point down the road. Best baseball games of their time.
