Konami revs hit $3.22 billion, profits fall 40%

Japanese publisher pulls in record annual revenues on Metal Gear Solid 4's strength--but net income drops to $113.3 million.

Konami has a big announcement lined up for Monday, one that may or may not be an Xbox 360 edition of Metal Gear Solid 4. However, what's certain is that the big reveal won't be in the publisher's fiscal year-end results, which were announced today.

Konami said today that revenues hit record levels during the April 1, 2008-March 31, 2009 period, thanks largely to the PlayStation 3 launch of MGS4 in June 2008 and its Pro Evolution Soccer franchise. During the 12 months, Konami pulled in ¥309.7 billion ($3.22 billion), a 4.2 percent year-over-year increase. Broken out by segment, Konami's digital entertainment arm--which includes console, handheld, arcade, and card game businesses--led revenue gains, growing 4.9 percent to ¥187.6 billion ($1.95 billion).

Despite those company-best revenues, the publisher saw a significant drop-off in net income, which fell 40.7 percent to ¥10.8 billion ($113.3 million). Konami did not directly address the cause of the large falloff in profit, saying only that the Japanese economy had entered a recession, the strong yen hurt overseas income, and consumer spending declined during the year.

During the period, Konami continued to see strong performance from its Metal Gear series. According to the publisher, the franchise--including the top-rated MGS4--sold 4.75 million units worldwide. Though Konami did not break out specific sales figures for MGS4, the publisher did say that its online component--Metal Gear Online--had accrued 1.3 million accounts worldwide since launch.

Projecting results for its current fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, Konami said revenue growth should be flat, rising an insignificant 0.1 percent to ¥310 billion ($3.23 billion). However, the publisher expects to see a significant rebound in profit, which it forecasts to grow 47.1 percent to ¥16 billion ($166.7 million).

    I dont remember ever seeing a teaser site for a Port before. Why is everyone arguing about this? cant both happen? i would think that Hideo Kojima would have enough faith in someone to just port the game over while he happens to work on MGS5 for the PS3 or maybe something else. For all i know the S or 5 stands for "Super Monkey toy along" or 5 morons jumping off a cliff. At this point i am not sure weather i want to see the MGS series continue. i got the feeling after playing 4 that everything was complete and there is no topping this. Plus Mr. Kojima might want to start on the new series but im pretty sure he wouldnt want to finish it. and if that happens it might get LAME. Also a part of me wants to play another metal gear. Raiden is still a wuss though and i dont want to hear him cry anymore.

    i cant wait till thursday night though hopefully ill find out. i got a timer for the timer

    @brendanhunt1 who says "im sure that mgs4 filled the whole 50gb blu ray disk"

    nope, that's an assumption based upon kojima saying he was having problems making the game fit on a blu-ray disc. so when gamers heard it will be on a 50gb dual layer disc, they put 2 and 2 together and got 5. the fact is, kojima was talking about having problems fitting it on the standard 25gb disc, and thats why they had to use a 50gb disc instead.

    heres what i posted before;

    http://pocketnews.cocolog-nifty.com/pkns/2008/06/metal_gear_soli_9cba.html

    mgs4 is 27.2 GB, mgo is 2.7 GB, making a total of 29.9 GB for the full game.

    thats whats on the blu-ray disc for mgs4 brendan, and has been confirmed elsewhere (which i guess is easy to do for those with a pc blu-ray drive, and would also be easy for them to disprove if that info was false).

    so theres no doubt that mgs4+mgo is only 30gb, not 50gb as many assumed.

    I hope konami have the sense to put mgs 4 on 360. Everyone knows if it went multi platform mgs 4 would just make konami even more money than it already has done. PS 3 fanboys are happy about metal gear and don't want it to go 360 but are the first to moan about splinter cell conviction not coming to ps 3. i am a 360 and wii owner. i admit i like the fact splinter cell conviction is 360 only but l konami and ubisoft are third partys and third parties should not side with anyone so mgs 4 should go 360 and splinter cell should go ps 3 . beny_pimpster what are you on about capcom are hardly dying. did you miss street fighter 4 and resident evil 5? did you not notice they have dead rising 2 and lost plant 2 on the way and boinic commado is coming?

    jj_wrecks, actually i own both ps3 and 360, so your silly attacks on a console you dont own are pointless. you are no better than those 360/ps3 gamers who keep attacking the wii. i dont own a wii, im not even a big nintendo fan (mario 64 was great though), but i can appreciate why it appeals to other gamers.

    also, why are you saying "i told you so"? nothing you said is a fact! as i mentioned already, nobody knows what that 5 or S means. why are you assuming is *must* be mgs5?

    in addition to the theories i mentioned in my last post, some think it may be an S for mgs4:s, since there was a mgs2:s (subsistance), which was an enhanced mgs2 for xbox and ps2. they may be right, they may be wrong, theres other theories too, but at the moment, its all just speculation, *not* fact!

    of course, you and others may be right, it *may* be mgs5, but even then, it doesnt mean mgs4 didnt come to the 360 for the reasons you gave.

    so until we know what that 5 or S means, and until we know mgs4 is definitely not coming to 360 and the reasons why, then you are in no position to be telling anyone here "i told you so". those are the facts. :-P

    edit: as gamespot have discussed here jj_wrecks ;-)

    sorry your xbox exclusives are so terrible you have to dream about a port. I dont give anyone a bad name. Im just saying i told you so. everything i stated was fact. Im not even a sony fanboy, if anything im a nintendo fanboy (see punchout icon?). I just know the better console when i see it.

    jj_wrecks, its people like you who give gamers a bad name with that attitude. tsk tsk. :-)

    at the moment it is still unclear what that image actually represents. i think its a bit too obvious to be mgs5. some have looked at the website closely and believe its part of a countdown, i.e. it will change to 4, then 3..2..1...then the announcement. others think it may be an "S".

    so i think you are sufferring from premature celebration at the moment. ;-)

    HAHAHAHA Told you all it was game number 5. A port in the near future is about as likely as a Gears of War port. Just being honest. This was a PS3 console mover. Get over it. Sorry you wasted your money on an Xbox. Yes i said wasted. List me the "big list of great games". Non-existant. Show me the next-gen format discs it plays? Non-existant. Show me built in wireless capability? Non-existant.

    Just because there are more people with Xbox 360s doesnt mean its better. You shouldve been patient. If you didnt rush out to get one when they came out you couldve saved the money and gotten a better console. Plus, to have the same things i have with the 400 i spent on the PS3, youd have to spend a lot more money.

    muddvader and fiskefyren, after mgs4 was released, the blu-ray disc was loaded into pc blu-ray drives so that gamers could see how big it was;

    for example;

    http://pocketnews.cocolog-nifty.com/pkns/2008/06/metal_gear_soli_9cba.html

    mgs4 is 27.2 GB, mgo is 2.7 GB, making a total of 29.9 GB for the full game.

    so yes, we do know how big it is, and its not the 50 GB some claimed. seems when kojima said it couldnt fit on a blu-ray disc, he was taking about the 25 GB single layer blu-ray disc, not the 50 GB disc.

    you know WHY this happened as much as it did.... the fact that Silent Hill was dumped off to a bunch of hacks. thats why. they lost a lot of money when the games started to go south.

    @fiskefyren
    I honestly hardly understood your comment, no offence, but someone down a while told me that MGS4 hardly fit on the Bluray disc which holds 50gigs, if thats the case i believe the most a DVD disc can hold is what 9-10gigs? that would be five or six discs. Its not vomiting, its simple math. *ducks*

    @nerd_assassin
    but see.. that defeats the purpose D= we dont want a port because we simply want an awesome game, but we want this game and at this current time we dont have a PS3, i personally am not stubborn about this console war bs so i do plan on getting a PS3, but who knows when that would be. So my dream is just that if they could do a port, that i could play it without blowing hundred of dollars(though worth it) to play one game, you know?

    this brings the oldest question and mystery back
    who is superior in graphics ps3 or 360?
    also can the xbox run a game as powerful as killzone2?
