Halo 3 dominates Canadian NPD September numbers

Bungie shooter and NHL 08 sit atop software chart as Xbox 360 finishes first in monthly hardware sales race.

Microsoft was counting on Halo 3 to spike sales of the Xbox 360, and that's exactly what happened upon the game's release last month, if the just-released Canadian NPD September sales figures are anything to go by.

After Xbox 360 hardware sales brought up the rear in July following Sony's price cut on the PlayStation 3, Microsoft's console has roared back to the head of the pack. The 360's Canadian sales of more than 51,000 systems in September even surpassed Nintendo's one-two chart-topping punch of the Wii and DS, which moved nearly 43,000 and 45,000 units, respectively. Furthermore, the PlayStation 3 bounced back from a down August with sales of nearly 16,000 units, which pushed it to roughly the same level of sales it saw following the price cut. Rounding out the field, the PlayStation Portable delivered sales of 22,000, whereas the PlayStation 2 could finally be losing some of its steam, considering that it turned in sales of a little over 16,000 for the month.

As expected, Halo 3 was the best-selling game of the month, with the standard edition selling nearly 135,000 copies, more than twice that of the next best-selling game. Interestingly enough, the C$149.99 ($153) Legendary Edition package of Halo 3, which included a replica Master Chief helmet, managed to sell 27,000 copies, which beat out the 25,000 sold of the C$79.99 ($82) Limited Edition version of the game. The standard edition Halo 3 costs C$69.99 ($72).

Halo 3 wasn't the only new hit of the month. As one might expect in Wayne Gretzky's homeland, Electronic Arts' NHL 08 also had a strong debut, with the Xbox 360 version's 54,000 sold making it the second-best-selling game of the month. The PS2 edition of the game came in third with 42,000, whereas the PS3 version netted nearly 21,000 sales. Nintendo's frequent bestseller Wii Play was relegated to a fifth-place finish with a little less than 25,000 copies sold.

Overall, the Canadian game industry posted September sales of C$129.7 million ($133.1 million), nearly double those of last September's C$66.2 million ($67.9 million). Hardware was responsible for C$56.3 million ($57.8 million) in sales, a 156 percent spike, with games up 60 percent to C$59.5 million ($61 million). Accessories also performed well, doubling last September's sales of C$6.9 million ($7.1 million) to bring in almost C$13.9 million ($14.3 million) for the month.

gamerkid99- Have you walked into a Future Shop? Almost all of the GTA FS's are sold out of Xbox 360 Elites whereas even with the 200 drop on the PS3 80 gig w/Motorstorm I can still walk in and there are some on shelves. As for the Wii as of this morning not a single GTA Best Buy or Future Shop had stock. Looks like the PS3 is FAR from taking over.

Interesting to see that the Canucks still get screwed with the exchange rate. Oh well they benefited during the 90s with boarder crossing deals and a lower value dollar.

ok, now that the canadian dollar is worth more than the american dollar (or about the same) why are games still 10 f-ing dollars more here, and consoles are still like 50 bucks more here, this is really dumb, and they need to change it. and i wouldn't be surprised if the ps3 did start selling better in canada when the put the 60 gig at $500 in the U.S. because it was $700 in canada then it dropped to $550- $150 price drop!

    360 STILL RULES!

Yes most of the population is concentrated in the south and of course people live all over the place but look at the something like the capitals (north) Whitehorse about 20K, Iqaluit 6K, Yellowknife 19K. Vancouver is a great city but greatest city in NA by who (LINK?), and your welcome for all the production we do there. CAD almost USD ALMOST hey we might as well annex

Actually saintsrow the population is pretty spread out. but all along the southern part of the country if you mean. But there are still a lot of people that live throughout way up into the arctic. Our country started nearly a hundred years after yours did, and there was already a lot more people who discovered those areas a lot longer time ago then Vancouver which is probably one of the newer cities, and is also regarded as THE BEST CITY IN NORTH AMERICA BY FAR. So whats so good about that? Do i even need to go on. Our dollar is just as good as yours is anyways and way less people haha.

So you're saying overpopulation is a good thing? No but whats so good about having the 2nd largest country in the world but barely having anyone in it (compared to the size) and having the population concentrated in one area?

    "@DiabloBasher(AKA:XBot)

Your lack of videogame/hardware knowledge astounds me. PS3 is not the system with upscaled 1080p resolutions, that would be your beloved RROD machine. PS3 runs 1080p natively. Also, the trend of 360 to PS3 porting is dying, you'd be hard pressed to find any games like that, as of late- as Sony has lended support to developers in a campaign to end this ridiculous trend. There are no games with framerate difficulties that you mention in plural, except for Madden-I have it, and it still looks and plays beautiful. Doesn't Halo 3 run at 640 FPS? If you actually played any PS3 games, which by your blatant expression of fiction, you do not- you would realize that PS3 actually has an excellent library of fun games for a less than one year old system-some games, of which, are technically impossible to be reproduced on 360(the actual trend that is taking place). First do your homework, then bash like you actually know something."

hahahhaa that's the dumbest thing i've ever read. elite runs 1080 p natively and ps3 doesn't have many games running in 1080p, i know because i have a ps3 that hasn't been turned on in months. resolution has nothing to do with graphics, i play mario in 720p on my wii, does that mean that the original mario has better graphics then halo 3?

and 640 fps is a bit ridiculous, kinda unnecessary since our eyes aren't that fast but i guess that's cool to know, i never knew that (sarcasm)

    do your homework you idiot.

oh and ps3 games dont have probs? nhl 08, madden, fear, skate, cod3, darkness..... i'm just going to stop now

27,000 people are going to be cramming their Master Chief helmets in boxes and pitching them in a year's time. I can't believe so many people were willing to wrap their feet around their head for a hunk of plastic and a couple of extra discs.

On a related note, both Walmart and Zellers are bringing-down game prices to match the rising CDN dollar (about time).

Halo 3 (yawwwwn!) only sold so many due to its overhyping not because its good. It'll be forgotten after christmas, just like the first 2 boring games. Now FarCry 2, however, IS a game to get excited about. ( Q2 2008 ) .

Sure, Gears of War was hyped to hell too, but it actually lived up to it. p.s ...GEARS OF WAR ON PC SOON WOOOOOOOOOH! ! PWNAGE
