E3 2002: Dave Mirra BMX XXX impressions
Strippers, the mentally unstable, and more occurrences of the "F" word than Straight Outta Compton. Dave Mirra has a new gimmick.
Dave Mirra got dirty. Acclaim and Z-Axis are teaming up to deliver a new twist on the alternative sports genre. While the game basically plays the same as the previous Dave Mirra games--the game has a handful of new tricks and now the X button can be used for acceleration--the game that is wrapped around the trick system has changed quite a bit. As the first M-rated game in its genre, Dave Mirra BMX XXX looks like it's going to work as blue as the powers that be will allow it to get.
The level that Acclaim representatives demonstrated for us in the PS2 version of the game showed off some really nice, smooth animation and some really nice-looking character models. The level looked large and didn't appear to have any really noticeable pop-up or slowdown. The game also features goals like helping a fireman with his limp hose, stopping a stray dog from crapping in the park, stopping a helmet-wearing slow kid from peeing in a pool, and collecting beer cans for a bum. Some goals will attach things to your bike, like a leaf blower or a basket. As is all the rage with alternative sports games these days, Mirra XXX won't have any sort of run timer. Timers will only appear when you accept one of the level's goals. Completing goals earns money, which you can take to the famous strip club, Scores. Spending money here unlocks FMVs of women in various states of undress. Acclaim representatives were unsure if the nudity in these scenes would end up running blurred or totally uncensored. Judging by the nonstop cursing and nudity that will permeate the rest of the game, you can bet that Acclaim will make an attempt to go all out and show as much skin as possible.
The game will feature a create-a-rider option, which will allow you to create nude female riders if that's your thing. According to Acclaim representatives, you can even make the breasts as large as you want. Multiplayer games will include a stripping game, where losing players remove an article of clothing.
We'll save the commentary on this sort of "mature" game for a later date. In the meantime, expect to see Dave Mirra BMX XXX on--or perhaps behind--store shelves in the fourth quarter of the year.
