The entertainment sector of The Learning Company assumes a new brand name, announces Xbox plans, and reveals release dates for two of its PlayStation 2 games.

The entertainment brand of The Learning Company has adopted a new name following its recent sale to the Gores Technology Group. The new division will be simply known as GAME Studios and will serve as an internal developer and third-party publisher of games on the PC and next-generation console platforms. The company currently plans to release Championship Surfer 2 and Legend of Alon D'ar, formerly known as Eternal Blade, for the Sony PlayStation 2, and it has unannounced projects planned for the Microsoft Xbox console.

"While The Learning Company name carries a lot of weight in the educational and productivity marketplaces, there has been a great deal of confusion as to our identity in the gaming community," said Jeff Hoff, general manager of GAME Studios. "People never fail to recognize our strong franchise lines, such as Myst and Chessmaster, but as an overall brand, we've been referred to as The Learning Company, Borderbund, Mindscape, SSI, Red Orb - you name it, we've heard it So, we felt it was time to come up with a name that left no doubt in anyone's mind. Simply put, GAME Studios is what we do; it's who we are."

Championship Surfer 2 is currently planned for release in September, and Legend of Alon D'ar will be released in November on the PS2.
