"Um IIRC there are no black people in Japan so why would they include them, or maybe they just forget to."

This is either very, very, VERY ignorant or a poor attempt at humor, not sure.

Actually it was just a random comment that I put out there to see if there was any response and I got one from you so I'm happy.

Wow, I forgot all about those guys. I thought the black characters in FFVIII were just nameless NPCs.

White people love Vivi because Vivi makes Reddas look like Malcom X.

Topic creator, are you from FFXIII board? Because the only person who would bring up such a controversial topic would be most likely from the FFXIII board. For any of you who don't know, there has been topics on there about creating black people in Final Fantasy. WTF is wrong with you guys? Why does race have to be an issue here?

If I remember correctly, there was also a black man in the Sector 7 training room.

Unless they made a change in FFT WotL (have only made it to Goug on my current playthrough), Rafa and Malak aren't black. They are a little more dark complected than the other characters, but they weren't black.

This is either very, very, VERY ignorant or a poor attempt at humor, not sure.

Well, it's not like there are no black people in Japan, but since 99.9% of the country is Asian, there aren't that much.

I really don't know what's worse. On the one hand, we have people who claim there are no black people in a video game, which is therefore racist.

On the other hand, we have people who are claiming all kinds of folks to be black, who are clearly NOT black (Rafa and Malak? LANI? Are you kidding me?) which reinforces the stereotype that white people think black people all look alike.

    This is a lose-lose situation.

If people are being identified as black who aren't black, how does that say "all black people look alike"?

    Besides, for Lani:

She's clearly a darker-skinned race; perhaps you'd like to clarify what she is? Not all black people have to be Barret-black.

There IS no such thing as a "darker-skinned" race in FFIX, because that's not how race works there. If she were a different race, she'd have to be some kind of anthropoid, like the hippo-folk or rat people.

So you're saying there's no such thing as different skin-toned races in FFIX? Clearly she must have a tail tucked away somewhere? Ok, that's one wacky interpretation...
