E3 06: Konami announces Karaoke Revolution: American Idol for PS2

Konami reveals that its next Karaoke Revolution game will be closely based on the popular American Idol TV show.

LOS ANGELES--Earlier today, at its pre-E3 press conference in Los Angeles, Konami confirmed that it will publish the previously unannounced Karaoke Revolution: American Idol for the PlayStation 2 in December. Unsurprisingly, the game promises to combine all of the features of existing Karaoke Revolution games with the TV-style presentation and judging that the show is known for.

Karaoke Revolution: American Idol will support up to eight players in head-to-head and team-based competitions and will feature a number of popular gameplay modes from other games in the series, such as duets, KR challenge, medley, and quickplay. You'll also find an all-new American Idol mode, of course, in which your customized character (complete with an EyeToy-generated face if you wish) will enter the competition and be rated by a panel of judges in exactly the same way that contestants are on TV.

You'll find 40 all-new songs in Karaoke Revolution: American Idol, including classics, modern hits, and some that have appeared on the show. Very little else is known about the game at this point, but we look forward to bringing you more information just as soon as we get our hands on a microphone and a copy of the game.

Did they have to go and sully "Karaoke Revolution" with something like this? Oh, well. It'll sell, since Americans are stupid enough to give "American Idol" ridiculously high ratings. Harmonix and Konami do deserve more attention for what they've done with the "Karaoke Revolution" series, but still... bah. This and the news about RedOctane selling out to Activision makes me a sad panda.

yeah, made by BAM! Games (the same developer that made the PS2's only Wipeout game - WipEout Fusion). At least this one will be developed more closely than the shoddy version that I've seen on Blockbuster's shelf for like $19 CDN. I hate these Idol shows that are sprouting up but its nice to hear that the next American Idol video game will involve ACTUAL SINGING rather than timed button presses a la Parappa The Rapper.
