NewsSpots: Heavenly Sword, Nitrobike, NASCAR 08, Overlord

Ninja Theory sings angelic tune; Ubisoft's arcade racer in sight; EA offers cash for laps; despot does splits.

Heavenly Sword swings with 10GB of sound
One undisputed advantage Sony's PlayStation 3 has over its competitors is the built-in Blu-ray player media format, which is capable of significantly more storage space than standard DVD discs. And while rumors continue to circulate that developers of cross-platform games have been hard-pressed to fully take advantage of that space, at least one Sony exclusive seems to be lathering on the extra touches in spades. In an interview with Develop Magazine, Ninja Theory's Tom Colvin and Sony Europe's Garry Taylor revealed that the anticipated action adventure Heavenly Sword contains more than 10GB of sound data--which is bigger than most games in their entirety. The game will reportedly feature approximately three and a half hours of music as well as more than 4,500 lines of spoken dialogue.

Nitrobike boosts to November
During the hemorrhaging of news at this year's E3 Media and Business Summit, Ubisoft revealed that its newest arcade-style racer Nitrobike would be coming exclusively to Nintendo's Wii later this year. Earlier this week, the France-based publisher updated the game's release window, from a broad "holiday season" approximation to a more narrow "November" street date. From the makers of Excitebike 64, Nitrobike features rocket-propelled motorcycles over various courses. The game also includes both single-player and online play.

EA Crafts NASCAR 08 tourney
As noted in GameSpot's review of the game, NASCAR 08 doesn't have much company on the retail circuit. With no rivals hitting the ignition switch for the game, EA is creating its own competition with its recently announced EA Sports Craftsman Challenge. Taking place in 11 different cities spanning the US over the next six months, players compete in NASCAR 08 on the Xbox 360. Registered participants can compete at either select Sears or Kmart retail locations, or online from their own home. The grand prize winner will receive $10,000. For more on the contest or to register, head over to EA's official tournament site.

Overlord 360 goes split-screen
Triumph Studio's despotic action adventure will be getting a free download on the Xbox Live Marketplace, which will "soon be available," reveals Codemasters. The new content will let gamers go head-to-head in a new split-screen multiplayer mode for the 360 on all existing multiplayer maps. Overlord was released in June on the 360 and PC, and allowed gamers to play the despot by commanding a small army of malicious minions.

seriously, are you real? can you even spell let alone type a remarkable thought for the gaming community to understand....the bottom line is that uncompressed sound is better....but you can still go on comparing and learning about "compressed, and compressed".....LOL

woop de damn doo!!! who cares!!!! i mean seriously who ever is making Heavenly sword is spending so much time worrying about the sound that they will probably forget about a little thing called "gameplay" and "frame rate" are the factor that will decide if the game will be good. the demo sucked anyways, it was sluggish and the frame rate dipped when something graphically intense like a small sword on the ground was thrown. i'd rather play Ninja gaiden sigma, oh, how long does the bioshock demo take to download, i got a slow internet

To actually hear uncompressed sound, you need a new receiver. For people with 5.1 setups, get the Onkyo 605. For 7.1 setups, get Yamaha 661. One HDMI cable from PS3 to either of these receivers will give you glorious uncompressed sounds. You haven't lived until you've heard RFOM in full, spacial 7.1 sound. The Heavenly Sword demo sounded fantastic, with sword clangs that sounded completely real. Uncompressed is the best, those who say otherwise just don't have a audio system. You can find either of those two receivers for under $400...I prefer (and own) the Yamaha 661.

Anyone know if Nitrobike will have the same make your own soundtrack feature as Excitetruck? More games should let you do that.

All I know is that I am playing high quality, 1080p games right now with far superior online play(the main thing for me) and at half the price. This surely is better than sitting infront of a gameless machine praying that MGS and heavenly sword will be good(there are NO guarantees they will be). You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out which system to go for.

Who cares about bigger storage for games when PERFECTLY good games already come on DVD9. I mean SERIOUSLY....would you rather have half a litre of quality beer or one litre of urine????? Now YOU trust me, the more time they spend on quantity, the less time they have to spend on quality.....FACT.

Well Heavenly Sword makes two games now on the PS3 I'd really want to play (Resistance). It does look sweet. Once more developers learn to take full advantage of the PS3 hardware I might get one. Probably next holiday season.

@spasticus162 "10gb of sound is fine but im betting it wont have a memorable soundtrack"

Uhh... have you played the demo? If the demo is any indication of what the rest of the soundtrack is going to be like this will be one of the highest/best composed soundtracks in video game history.

I have an idea, lets put all data for sound and leave 1 Kb for Nariko's clothes. She would sell millions. Heck, lets use 0 bytes, she'll fly higher and faster with no clothes on. Just a thought.
