Activision lays down Ferrari Challenge

Publisher secures North American distribution rights for PS3, Wii, PS2, and DS editions of upcoming racer; release confirmed for late summer.

Activision wants to take the pole position in the racing game genre, as evidenced by last year's purchase of Project Gotham studio Bizarre Creations and last week's announcement of the offroading Baja 1000. Today the publisher pulled another car into the garage, confirming that it has secured North American distribution rights for Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli.

Previously set for European release by System 3, Ferrari Challenge will find its way to domestic stores on the PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo DS. The sim-minded racer will include season and endurance modes, as well as more than 15 circuits. The PlayStation 3 edition of the game also supports online matches for up to 16 players, and Activision is promising a continuous stream of downloadable content over the PlayStation Network, including new cars, tracks, customization options, and updates to team and car rosters.

This is not the first time the Ferrari has been featured in games, as Sega devoted an entire game to just one model of the Italian sports car with the arcade, Dreamcast, and PlayStation 2 sim Ferrari F355 Challenge. Ferraris have also played prominent roles in Sega's OutRun series of arcade-style racers, and have appeared in a variety of other racers including Project Gotham Racing 4, Forza Motorsport 2, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Controller config sucks! You have to hit the R3 stick while holding the x button to shift up or down! Drifting thru the corners is sooo coool!

No X360 version. Damn. Especially if it does end up being sim-oriented. Personally, I'd love to see more racing games focusing on a smaller number of cars that they could really nail down, as opposed to hundreds of cars that I won't even use.

I have a feeling that I would probably only rent this game. Hopefully they exceed my expectations and this might actually be a good game worth playing. Especially if you are considering the other racers that the Xbox 360 already has.

Hopefully this game is the new Enthusia, and not some watered down arcade crap like GRID turned out to be...

I'm not surprised that there isn't a 360 version. They probably still have a deal with MS for PGR.

I agree with you. NFS Porsche Unleashed was one of my favorite game for the PS1.

Looks pretty, but a game focusing on Ferraris only, sounds like it has alot to prove in order to be successful.

wow, a game with make of car....brilliant. Anybody else find this kind of a stupid idea in todays game space--I mean, let's see, I could play GT5 with 100's of different cars....or "ferrari challenge", with what, about 10 different cars? Whoopdy **** do...pathetic, simply pathetic. BTW, this company will not beat out polyphony or codemasters.
