Pro Evo kicks FIFA off the UK top spot

Konami's football game goes straight in at number one in the all-formats chart; PS3 version accounts for majority of sales.

The latest UK all-formats chart has been released, and it will no doubt put a smile on Konami's face. The publisher's latest entry in its annual football franchise, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, has entered at number one just days after its release. It has also knocked archrival FIFA 09, published by EA Sports, off of the top of the charts. Although Chart-Track does not reveal numbers sold, the sales-tracking body did reveal that this week saw a 54 percent drop in sales for FIFA, which slid into the number two slot.

THQ's Saints Row 2 has entered the chart at number three and, according to Chart-Track, has seen about three-quarters of its sales on the Xbox 360 format and a quarter on Sony's PlayStation 3. For Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, the opposite was true: Chart-Track reports that 58 percent of its UK sales were for the PS3, 40 percent for the Xbox 360, and 2 percent for the PC.

The Wii continues to hold its own in the all-formats chart, with Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Play hanging on in fifth, sixth, and eighth position respectively. The multiplatform Lego Batman is still riding high for Warner Bros and Traveller's Tales at number four, and the top 10 is rounded out by Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway at 9 and 10 respectively.

Further down the chart, BioShock reentered at number 14 after its PS3 debut last week, and Halo 3 climbed six places to 16, perhaps due to the recent Xbox 360 price cuts or news of the upcoming Halo 3: Recon expansion.

that proves my comment that this year's Fifa wasn't as close as good and improved like 2008 was, Fifa 2009 just do the same and even got downgraded viasually, improvemwents on Gameplay can't justify everything, as Fifa 2008 was already the best Soccer game Ever, just to be topped I believe by Konami's this years installment

Didn't expect that a Futbol game would be the number one game out of all. Not that I'm complaining.

Lol @ people saying it's very easy to score in Fifa 09. Isn't that the case if you're - gee I don't know - used to playing football games? U act like the sport was created last year. Same applies to PES. If it was a harder game to score in, people would be saying that. But they're not.

If u like Fifa - you've most probably already got it. If you like PES - same scenario. And if you don't like the games, then trade em in for something else, rather than coming onto a webpage to bicker about it all...

And in terms of difficulty, difficulty settings are there to create a giant form of realism. So unless you're playing on the hardest settings, using every tactic the game has to offer to your advantage, your complaints about difficulty or lack thereof are pointless.

I'm sticking to PES this year because the team mate AI is a lot smarter than in FIFA. The way they make use of spaces, go for the ball and the way they understand passes makes PES a joy to for me play. It feels like they actually understand the way the game works and doesn't feel like your playing a computer game as much as it used to. PES feels more like the real thing to me. To me FIFA still feels like a computer game complete with AI that doesn't seem to understand what it's supposed to do unless you tell them to. My main complaint though is that the AI doesn't seem as smart in the be a legend mode as it is in the regular games. FIFA 09 is a good Football game, but Pro evo just feels better to me. It fits my play style better.

To be honest even though i like Fifa this year more than PES i would not want either to corner the market, as it benefits us the gamer to have this rivalry between PES and Fifa developers competing to make the better game.

I have been a fan of both from the start but Pro Evo was always the game me and my friends played most, but over the last 2 years we have gradually started to play fifa more and since pes 09 came out we all decided that fifa 09 was easily the better football game and that was coming from some hardcore pes fanboys that just finally had to admit that PES lack of innovation is just not acceptable.

I still read allot of PES is more realistic, nonsense we are all massive football fans that also play and fifa 09 is the most realistic football game on the market, some people have said its to easy to score when infact it's not, rarely do we have a game vs or online that gets 3-4 goals its mainly 2-1/1-0 etc.

I love pes but konami's constant milking is beyond a joke, they have still really not built a next gen engine from the ground up, its just minor iteration after minor iteration, it still uses canned animations also, fifa on the other hand has finally delivered on the potential there next gen engine has showed over the last year or two.

to djezhel619...haha very funny..i play on 50 inch pioneer full hd tv..and i played the games..and if u dont think that fifas pitch looks blurry and aweful..then u r a really blind fanboy of fifa..i played on hard difficulty and i was scoring like i was playing against a baby...my vote goes to pes2009...

How sad to see many are still sticking to PES just because of the name itself or the loyalty. Very smart of PES to use "PES unites", indeed fans have united and come to buy PES2009, but only to find out it's half-baked. Sorry, but fifa09 is easily the better game, reason why u see PES having more sales is because people are misleaded by IGN reviews and also, fanboys who buy the game out of loyalty.

I have also played both of them. I played Fifa 09 first and thought it was pretty good.. but.. I later played Pro evo 2009 and went back to Fifa and saw just how slow Fifa 09 plays, even though they have increased the game flow. I agree with another person, it is alot easier to score on Fifa 09. When I was playing Pro evo 2009 I shot at the goalkeeper four times in a row, even with a mid air bicycle kick and I couldn't score. Also, I've noticed how teams play differently too, I was playing against Barcelona with Man U, and Barcelona played very well. On the opposite scale.. I played Stoke with Man U and found them relatively easier because of the quality of the players. Also, the colours are beautiful on Pro evo, look at the reds of Man U or the blue of Italy, or the yellow of Barcelona. I played one team in the champions League, who were wearing purple; the colour looked beautiful. When I played Stoke with Man U, I played for 10mins each way.. I won 4-0... So.. for a laugh, to hear the funny commentaries; I thought I'll try and get a 10-0 victory using 30mins each way. Stoke played really well at the beginning and I only won 5-0. I wanted to hear the commentary.. This is a white wash, this is one sided, or its' now 10 nil. I couldn't do it though. One positive thing I will say about Fifa though, is the position of your players when a cross is put into the box. I found it easier to move my player using the speed button to position myself better for a header. In the end though, my vote goes for Pro Evo 2009, more fun, a better game.

Every year i buy both and trade in one, this year PES is going back.Fifa is ahead of PES in the critic and user scores. The only reason PES is ahead of Fifa in the Charts is because its new,end of.

I tried both FIFa 09 and PES 09 demos, I would go with FIFA 09, as PES have just a slight advantage in fluid gameplay, but the advantage ends there.

I've played both PES09 and Fifa09 demos and I do think Fifa has improved it's gameplay, it's getting there. I used to be a Fifa fan til 2000 and I switched to Pro Evolution because of the realistic and fun gameplay. Fifa has gone downhill til 08. PES better improve otherwise it will lose it's fans. At this moment in time i'm still with PES. But in a couple of years who knows!! I'm still waiting for my PES09, bought it for £27 from Asda online on the release date, now the price is £35.
