You will hear a chime when you enter the codes correctly.
You can enter the invincibility code again to remove the effects.

When prompted for passwords for ships #3, #24, and #59 in the US release of R-Type Final enter the following:

R-Type Final Glitches

Infinite loop in flight path

At the very end of Stage 3.0 (Battleship Raid) you have to destroy four plates to get to the boss. If you move your ship to the very upper left corner and do not destroy any of the plates, the game will not begin the boss fight and you can spend an unlimited amount of time in the stage. This is a great way to unlock ships without having to play through the entire game.
