Shippin' Out April 30-May 4: Spider-Man 3, PS3 Gauntlet II

[UPDATE] Activision's multiplatform synergistic action movie tie-in dominates the week's releases; Midway's peckish-adventurer classic leads pack of downloadable releases--which also includes the much-vaunted Super Rub-A-Dub.

Even in a season of slim releases, the current week stands out as a lean time. Just 15 games are slated to be released this week, nearly half of which are downloadable retro games for the most recent crop of consoles.

Leading the classic pack is Gauntlet II for the PlayStation 3, which will be available via the PlayStation Store on May 3 for $4.99. The Xbox 360 gets three games--Catan, based on the classic board game Settlers of Catan, and Centipede/Millipede, a compilation of the two titular angry arthropod-based arcade classics. Both games cost 800 Microsoft points ($10). Last but not least, Wii owners got a trifecta of old-school console games: the original NES Castlevania, the SNES Legend of the Mystical Ninja, and the TurboGrafx-16 Shockman.

As for all-new releases, the week is dominated by the media-synergy juggernaut known as Spider-Man 3. The game hits stores the same day as its film inspiration--which is reportedly the most expensive movie ever made--hits theaters. Like many summer blockbuster tie-ins, Activision is bringing the game to a bevy of platforms, including the PC, PS3, DS, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Game Boy Advance, and Wii. The PS2 and Wii will also get Legend of the Dragon, based on the cartoon series, and Heatseeker, a flight combat sim from British publisher Codemasters.

[UPDATE] Lastly, the week will also see the release of Super Rub-A-Dub for the PS3. The game, which was touted at the D.I.C.E. summit in February, is an expanded version of the "Rubber Duck" tech demo used to show off the PS3 at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo. No pricing information on the game was available as of press time.

That Super Rub-a-Dub game is more difficult than it looks. I might end up buying that one for my family though. I'm always curious about what the Rubber Duck demo looked like on the PlayStation 2; I'd like to know how it compares to the PS3 version.

nice, I can finally play Centipede/Millipede and Gauntlet II online. Also good news for the PS2 as it's getting more games which means more sales for Sony. 110 million own it so I doubt they would get a wii when they have a console that the games are available for.
