Sega powering up Iron Man 2

Publisher extends Marvel partnership to sequel of Robert Downey Jr.-led superhero film; multiplatform effort due 2010.

Paramount and Marvel Studios' Iron Man was one of the top-performing films of 2008, having grossed nearly $600 million in total box-office sales. Sega and Secret Level's game adaptation of the same name may have turned its repulsor rays on critics, but consumers were certainly attracted to the game, making it a million-selling hit and then some.

It's no surprise, then, that Sega has been handed the reins for a follow-up. The publisher announced today that it has extended its partnership with Marvel to include a game based on Iron Man 2. The multiplatform game is expected to launch alongside the Jon Favreau-helmed, Robert Downey Jr.-led film in 2010. Sega also has the rights to create games based on Marvel's upcoming Thor and Captain America films, having shipped the Edge of Reality-developed The Incredible Hulk last year.

Details on Iron Man 2 were not revealed, though Sega did say that the game's engine has been updated and that gamers can "expect an entirely new and enhanced gameplay experience." The publisher also noted that the game is in development at Sega Studios San Francisco.

A number of high-profile actors have joined the cast or are in talks to appear in Iron Man 2. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as the titular tortured hero, Don Cheadle will replace Terrence Howard as Downey's metal-clad cohort War Machine, and Gwyneth Paltrow will return as Tony Stark's secretary, Pepper Potts. Other names attached to the film include Samuel L. Jackson as SHIELD commander Nick Fury and Mickey Rourke as Soviet relic Crimson Dynamo.

Meh. The movie was good. Didn't even check out the first game. I imagine it isn't top notch since it's another game based on a movie. I think the best game of the sort since NES has been the first Hulk, but even that was just mediocre.

Didn't like the first game. And, usually movies of these types are just a set up for the threequil. I'll wait and see, but it already looks dissapointing (e.g. using IM sequils to launch other possible franchises).

First one was alright, only played the demo though so never saw the last few parts which apparently were atrocious. Just improve on the flaws and make the battles exciting, flashy and fun! Also powers are always good to make you feel like your always getting awesomer. =)

I agree with whoever said they need to base it off comics. Comics are more of the big-speech-bubble-WHAM type of action than the cinematic explosions of the big screen. Video games being cinematic can turn out well (like in MGS4) but only, and only, when it's cinematics designed for consoles - not some movie rip-off crap.

I hope this game disappears as fast as the enemies do in the Wii version of the first Ironman..
The guy freaking walked faster than he could fly!! And don't even get me started on the controls..
The intro screen to the 360 version was good.. but even the drab ps1-style cgi cutscenes were about as vague as the gameplay..

About the only good thing with the game was the voice acting, and that's because I quite like Robert Downey Jr.

Ironman 2 - for it to be any good - give it to capcom. Case closed

If its a port of the PS2 to the PC then I'm not buying...... this "We're upgrading the game engine to bring gamers to see a whole new gaming experience.. blah.. blah... blah... blah" is just crap.... They did the same with The Hulk game... I hope they won't screw pc gamers again...=(

To be honest, I found the game to be a lot of fun. I really liked the graphics and although it could be challenging, it was a game that I beat like 4 times and found the level of challenge pretty well done. Anyway, it sold well over a million copies across multiple systems. So someone liked it and that's reason enough for a sequel. I just don't want them to fix the flying bits, it was the best.

One of the biggest problems with movie-to-game tie-ins is they try to keep the game's story along the lines of the movie's story. They need to learn that that philosophy just does not work. Give games based on other properties a separate, yet comprehensible and believable, story (not to mention better overall gameplay) and maybe, JUST MAYBE, they will be worth playing time and time again.

One reason movie to game releases are so bad is because the companies always want to release the game at the same time as the movie to maximize profit regardless of the quality. What would normally be tested and actually have time put into it, is cut short by the release deadlines. One movie to game release i can think of was actually pretty awesome, Chronicles of Riddick: EFBB. And what do you know, it wasn't constricted to releasing at the same time as a movie.

I think this game has a chance.
They already have the game engine made, it only needs tweaked now and they have plenty of time to do it. Its not like the game played played badly, it was just too hard and the level design and missions could have been a bit more thuroughly made.

Here's a rule of thumb that never seems to fail...Videogames based on movies are always horrible. The reverse is also true. Movies based on videogames are always horrible. The two should never mix because the original idea, whether it be movie or game, always raises peoples' expectations...and those expectations are never met.

Everyone seems to hate the first game .. perhaps that's why Sega has been tapped to take over ...

The movie will sell and the game will fail.
    ...
Assuming that everyone hated the game as much as I did...
    Right?
