Shippin' Out April 9-13: Super Paper Mario, PS3 MKII

[UPDATE] A new Wii RPG and PlayStation 3 retro-classic top a slim slate of springtime shipments; Boom Boom Rocket lands on XBLA.

As spring temperatures begin to thaw snow across the country, the game industry is entering a bit of a release drought. The second week of April 2007 will see under a dozen new titles arriving on store shelves and download services.

The highest-profile game is easily Super Paper Mario, one of the first role-playing games for the Wii. The sequel to the popular 2003 GameCube RPG Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is already being embraced by critics and is expected to be one of the top-selling games on Nintendo's new platform.

Sony's latest console, the PlayStation 3, is also getting a new game this week...sort of. On Thursday, Mortal Kombat II, the arcade classic that thrilled gamers and horrified media watchdogs back in 1993, will be available on the PlayStation Store. The game will support online matchups via the PlayStation Network and will retail for $4.99.

[UPDATE] Xbox 360 owners get a new Xbox Live Arcade offering this week in the form of Boom Boom Rocket. The game went live early Wednesday morning in the US, and costs 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

On the portable front, DS owners will get a tasty treat in the form of Cake Mania. A spiritual cousin to Diner Dash, Cake Mania will see players run a bakery that caters to increasingly cranky customers. DS owners not interested in simulated culinary arts can pick up Toondoku, a compilation of Sudoku-based puzzle games featuring cartoons.

As is often the case, the PC welcomes the most releases of the week. Leading the pack is The Ship, which arrives in boxed retail form after being available on Valve Software's Steam download service since last summer. Frontline: Fields of Thunder retreads the well-worn World War II real-time strategy genre, while Whirlwind Over Vietnam is set during a less popular conflict in Southeast Asia.

This week's new releases are listed below (list taken from retailer information--actual dates may vary).

I'm sure you mean Tekken 6 dude.

Yeah, good point BILLNYE6983. Those are mighty impressive games, I back 'em up too.

Now the MK series, I never liked their 3D games. The only reason MKIII is my fav is cause of the insane roster of fighters.

pantera is obviously complaining about not having a PS3 whenever he decides to talk trash about it. just because you can't afford it doesn't mean it's a waste of money. please, grow up.

gmayronne MKII, 5 bucks.......oh yeah, im there dude. as for you 360 owners, at least you got Ultimate MK3.......hehe, that game SUUUUUCKED, worst mortal kombat in the history of mortal kombat, oops scratch that last remark, MK Special Forces was a much steamier turd

Honestly, I can't see how you can say MK2 is better than UMK3.... Not saying that MK3 was better, but they are almost the same exact game. That was the problem with the Mortal Kombat franchise until Deadly Alliance. They just added new stuff without delivering a different experience

    "panteral3 Cost of a PS3 - $600

    Cost of a game more than a decade old - $ 5.00

Realizing you bought the most expensive hardware of this generation to play nothing more than half-a$$ed rehashes and ports - priceless."

Ok this is pretty lame, did you know that (based on GS ratings) like 3 out of the top 5 games are VC games the other two are Twilight Princess (which is on the GC...) and WarioWare, so let's really not bash the PS3 for bringing a good game to it's store when Nintendo isn't even making new games that are as good as it's old games. If you check down the list of Wii games you'll see that most it's high rated games are VC games.

Still not sure how the PS3 'sucks' and has 'no good games'. Resistance, Tekken 5, Virtua Fighter 5, Ridge Racer, and Motorstorm are all good games to me (and they are all exclusive too) so I'm not sure what your talking about.

Glad to read that there's a PS2 release, sorta caught me by surprise. None of the other games peaked my interests.
