Tony Hawk on bikes. Yes, there are differences between the two games, but the easiest way to describe Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX is "Tony Hawk on bikes." Currently, the game's development team is trying to get a one-level demo of the game onto the Tony Hawk 2 disc. Tony Hawk 2 should be finished within the next couple of weeks, so it sounds like it's going to be a real race against time.

As far as features go, the game will have roughly the same modes that Tony Hawk 2 will, right down to the level editor. You'll be able to upgrade your bike as you progress through the game, and each level will have multiple goals and secret areas. In one level, if you do a vert trick over the top of a pipe, it opens up a garage door that leads to an outside dirt area. While not in the current version of the game, different bikes will handle differently on asphalt and dirt. Graphically, the game looks pretty sharp. It has some nice animation for the various tricks, and the riders look pretty solid. Right now, your bike just disappears when you wreck and reappears when you stand up, but hopefully this will be replaced with a slightly more realistic effect. Also, the wheels on the bikes are extremely polygonal - hopefully they'll be replaced with something a little more round looking before the game ships.

While it still needs a couple of months of tweaking and polishing, the game is already fun to play. The levels in the current build look pretty nice, and the game will be instantly familiar to Tony Hawk fans, right down to the manuals that are all the rage in Tony Hawk 2. Look for more information on the game's later levels as development progresses.
