ESRB rates R-Types for PS3, PSP

New listing suggests Irem shooter compilation headed for Sony's latest systems in downloadable form.

Irem's classic side-scrolling shooter series R-Type supposedly toppled its last Bydo Empire in 2004 with R-Type Final. Since then various series installments have been remade and rereleased in a variety of formats, and an all-new R-Type game has been announced in the strategic spin-off R-Type Command.

Now it appears there's yet another R-Type release on the horizon, as the Entertainment Software Rating Board has updated its database with a listing for R-Types on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Initially published by ASCII on the original PlayStation in 1999, R-Types compiles the first two installments of the arcade shooter series and gives players infinite credits to plow their way through the notoriously difficult games.

Rated E for Everyone, the game is listed with SCEA as its publisher, a common designation for third-party PlayStation games that go up on Sony's downloadable game service. Both Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Namco Bandai's Tekken 2 for the PS3 and PSP are listed in the ESRB database with SCEA as the publisher.

    @juiceb0xx

    The reason they mention the rating is that the ESRB board is the source for the information. Thats where the first news about Gauntlet DS came from.

    Interesting how they had to mention that it is being rated...arent all games rated by the ESRB? Thankfully I havent had to worry about being carded for anything and not gaining access to my drink,movies, and most importantly games.

    I don't know why this is listed on the main news page. This is old stuff. R-type has had a playable PSP demo for about a month now on the Japanese playstation store.

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'm an R-Type Fanatic; ever since I first played it at my local dentist's place (believe it or not, they had a machine there. Free to play, too!), I've loved the game. It's a classic, and the fact that it's coming back is making me ecstatic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Once again:

    you can get r-type final, just look on amazon or something. i got it brand new for a pretty good price on there, along with legend of dragoon for only 10$ (legend of dragoon was 10$, not both games).

    Couldn't agree more with mcuth re: R-Type Final. Couldn't believe my luck finding it and at a decent price. Didn't know just how awesome it was going to be until I got into it though.

    And, R-Type on PSN equals happiness to me. Final would have been awesome, but I'll take what I can get.

    R-Type Final was so killer. I highly recommend it for PS2 owners (for that matter, you MUST play Gradius V). While we're at it, when is the XBLA's Ikaruga gonna be finished?

    "This is news worthy?"

    ANYTHING related to the R-Type series is newsworthy.
