PSN update sees rush of PSP games

Brothers in Arms, TMNT, Chessmaster, Driver '76 go downloadable for Sony's handheld; other additions include PS3 Droplitz and original PlayStation Mobile Light Force.

With Sony's PSP Go set for an October 1 launch, there's little debate that the electronics giant needs to significantly bolster its library of downloadable titles for the premium-priced UMD-less handheld. Today's PlayStation Network update goes some way toward addressing that concern, with four PSP games being added to the downloadable storefront, as well as one PlayStation original playable either on the handheld or on the PlayStation 3.

The newly added PSP games are Brothers in Arms: D-Day, Chessmaster: The Art of Learning, Driver '76, and TMNT. All four of the games have been previously released on the system's UMD format and carry a $19.99 downloadable price tag (with the exception of Brothers in Arms D-Day, which sells for $14.99). They range in size from 84MB (Chessmaster) to 1.05GB (Brothers in Arms).

The catalog of original PlayStation titles is also being expanded this week with the addition of XS Games' Mobile Light Force for $5.99. Originally released in 2003, the game is a localized version of Capcom's arcade shoot-'em-up Gunbird.

The last full game being added to Sony's online storefront this week is Droplitz for the PlayStation 3. Released earlier this week on the Xbox 360's Live Arcade service, the aquatic puzzler is available for $9.99.

In addition to the usual assortment of new trailers, themes, and downloadable content for games, including Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Little Big Planet, and Cuboid, Sony has also introduced a PS3 demo for The BIGS 2. Set for a July 7 release, the arcade-style baseball game is being developed by Blue Castle Games, the studio behind Dead Rising 2.

    You know, I like it that the PSP is getting attention, but I'm getting sick of the PS Classics getting crap updates. And that its getting games that no one in their right mind has even heard of. The last few updates have been junk that nobody cares about... whatever happened to us getting FF Tactics or Xenogears, huh? Or even Wild Arms 2? I've noticed they haven't been rushing those out lately. I'd love to see Vagrant Story on PSN.

    steelwing i am inclined to agree with you haha, you certainly do wonder, cos no way can you rely on getting the games you already own for download.

    id also like to point out gamespot are a bit stupid, driver 76 was already on the psn store it has been for ages

    If they can produce a 64GB M2 stick for PSP Go.. that will end the problem of space for me... and my iPod will be history. The Playstation store better start getting more than 4 titles a week added.. They need to add EVERY title ever released...and when they do they need to upgrade the store to be able to sort and filter on release date, title, manufacturer and genre... not just the UMD, PSone and PSP download only categories. Also... why can't ALL of these be a download also available for play on the PS3? I am more than sure it can handle all the PSP games. This is a great feature with the PS1 titles, why not all of them?

    PSN store still is extremely poor, you can't find any of the most popular games except a couple maybe. Most of the titles are stuff I wouldn't bother playing even if offered free. Same for older games, I already feel sorry for the people who'll fall for PSP Go.

    A PSP 3000 cost $169.99 A 16 gig memory stick PRO DUO cast $79.99
    So why buy a PSP Go for $249.99 when you can get a PSP 3000 with 16 gig memory stick for the same price that has a larger screen and UMD drive.

    ---> even better, 32gb for ~$100.. http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?message.uid=40571136#U40571136

    I like to see on PSN, Vandal Hearts 1+2 (the first one i want more, maybe as an snack before the next VH come on the end of the year), Suikoden 2 (i did replayed the first one 5 days before and i was again great and i want to be able to use the save in the second one ), Legend of Dragoon (its on the japan PSN already), Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen ( Midnightshade29 is right its great game, i liked it much more than the other Legacy of Kain games, not to mention it was my first PSX game ), FFT (again on the japan PSN already), Vagrant Story and many many more great titles.

    Yeah...I second the request for Blood Omen, Leagacy of Kain and Legend of the Dragoon!!! I think we will have more hope with Dragoon though, for one it was Sony's premeir RPG and it was a fantastic epic that i like more than Final Fantasy ...gasp....yeah it's true it rocked and GS can go sit on its 6.5 score it gave it....shameful, they didn't like the game becasue it was too long? As for Blood Omen, It is was published by activision back then, but then Eidos Got the rights to the franchise which is why Legacy of Kain (raziel games) and Blood Omen 2(ps2 game) were done published by Eidos and made by Crystal Dynamics. The first Blood Omen is still an epic to this day!! I rate it up there with Castlevania SOTN...thats how good it is. But Square-Msenix...now owns Eidos, so i doubt we will see them anytime soon. Look how long it took FF7 to come stateside!!!! Yet alone an Eidos game, or hell even other popular square titles like Vagrant Story....

    People blame Sony for the slow release of PS1 games, but that simply is the wrong people to balme. 80% of all PS1 games on PSN are Sony Published, with 2nd place going to Capcom and 3rd going to Konami, with 1 Squaresoft(not enix) game....Why these 3rd party ps1 game makers don't put there entire catalog on there is beyond me..hell ff7 sold 100,000 in a week (a 12 year old ps1 game) The games are made...the emulation is flawless on psp and ps3 for ps1 games... It's instant profit at zero cost...stupid 3rd parties

    @brendanhunt1,

    Well, I'd assume that the reasoning behind that is that since the ps2 is still on the market that probably isn't a viable plan right now for Sony to do (as they are, of course, still making money off the ps2 hardware as well as games). I would think that this will only become a option, with ps2 games when the actual system is completely discontinued and all manufacturing of it has completely ended--a la the PSone/PS. Then that's when you'll probably see ps2 games on PSN.

    On that note though of titles that I'd like to see on PSN, man I'd LOVE for Sony to talk with Konami about releasing the original Silent Hill! Damn, now that's a title I'd love to get....of course, knowing Konami and Sony that'll probably take forever to ever happen (or the JPN PSN will get if years before the US one). You see how long it took us to get MGS? Well, I can dream...

    I wish they would post legends of Dragoon. My fave PS1 title. but TMNT is totally fun to play.

    I'm glad Sony finally realized that the game library on PSN was pathetic and that they're bolstering it up for PSPgo. But I'll be keeping my old PSP and just get a 16GB memory stick.
    Now where are the PS2 games on PSN? PLEEEZZZZ
