So the main character in the game is Black this time around?

- Jan 10, 2012 11:38 am GMT^^^^So basically it's like movies.
In order for a black character to be tolerable he must be non threatening and play an inferior roll to the white characters while at the same time keeping his hands away from any and all white women. : / - Jan 10, 2012 12:35 pm GMTThat is true or the target audience will dislike the movie and the people who worked on the movie want money so they give the fans what they want.
That is why there is a "Black Best Friend" archetype to appease some of the fans over unwanted "discrimination" outcries, people want to relate to the character they are observing or playing as and it won't work as well when the "Main Character" is switched with the "Comic Relief Minority/Loudmouth Minority/Scary Black Man."
For example, imagine if Heller was in the first game and Mercer is the soldier to replace him, do you think Mercer would be more well received?

Blacks have commonly been depicted in American entertainment as "If they ain't funny, They ain't worthy", there are actors who are more action oriented like Sam Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Will Smith who usually star in black led movies and it leads to larger black audiences, but some producers want a larger target audience so they make adjustments and they don't always turn out well such as the movie Spawn.
And anything hinting at a interracial involvement would be unfavourable to most groups so that may lead to negative scores because of bias may be present... or the media in question could just be awful. ( a really weak example but "Secret Saturdays" would be one.)
Try switching some characters and think about how long would they last... IMO the TV show Psych wouldn't last a whole season on the USA network if Gus was the Psychic Detective.
tl;dr - No demand for black characters = Stay with the old format for profit. (Even though there are quite a number of minority led games/shows.) - Jan 10, 2012 1:23 pm GMTSilent_Guy13 posted...

I can totally see that. If Heller was the main character in the first game it probably would not have sold at all. Kinda like my theory on the Matrix movies. The Matrix had the most diverse cast I had ever seen in a science fiction film series before, but If Neo had been cast as a black man like originally intended, they would not have gotten past the first film.

I agree with that fully. Changing around a side character in that film did not work because the main character was still nonwhite. I have noticed that majority white audiences do not respond well to being the side characters in films.

Yes, Even among the actors you mentioned, they are not allowed to have onscreen interracial relationships that pan out. I remember reading and article a little while back about how finding a leading lady for Will Smith is very hard because He has a huge white audience following and they will not respond well to him being with a white woman in a film but yet would loose interest if his leading lady was black. So the producers often times have to go for the "middle" and cast Latino or ambiguous leading ladies. The underlining message in Hancock was very deep, (stay away from our white women). Or as some one comically put it, "Superman's weakness is Kryptonite, Hancock's weakness is white women" lol.

I fully agree. Infact there was a Spy show on a year ago called Undercovers. It was about a black couple who were spies. Very interesting show, but it got canned so fast it made people's heads spin.

In the end, anyone can see that Gears would not work with if Cole had Marcus's personality and role or If Louis proclaimed that he hated everything he saw, for it also comes down to visual appeal and some would argue that most minorities are not that appealing to look at. - Jan 10, 2012 2:59 pm GMTSilent_Guy13 posted...

Well for what other reason could it be?
Anyway, The three largest markets that get catered to in the entertainment industry are white males, white females, children, and black females in that order. You can break just about anything that comes out down to those 4 demographics.

I'm not sure about that.
Despite the complaints about Sheva being included in Resident Evil 5 there were threads and threads and threads about how hot she was. However I do believe if she were partnered with a Black guy she would all of a sudden become less interesting and "un accessible" and thus "Not hot" anymore. It's all about how you market things.
Another example is Rochelle from Left 4 Dead 2. She was the most hated character in the series and no one could ever explain exactly why they hated her so much. While Zoey is the most loved character in all of Fandom... and no one can explain why. Fast forward to the Cross over between the L4D survivors and The L4D2 survivors and a funny video with Rochelle and Francis talking about things they hate together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugBwjN3Kvqg
And a few hints of a relationship between the two thrown in by the creators, and all of a sudden There are comments like "Rochelle Rocks!" and "Rochelle is Hot!" coming out of the woodwork. The character all of a sudden became accessible because of her linked accessibility to a beloved white character. - Jan 10, 2012 3:23 pm GMTCall me racist all you want but I don't think that white comic book writers or white video game designers should ever feel pressured to make a character black because it's been a certain amount of time since their last "ethnic" character.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_black_superheroes - is a list of all black comic book superheroes. The best ones being Spawn, Steel, the black Green Lantern, Black Lightning (lol?).
So is it "unfair" or racist that 90% of the characters on this list are crap characters that no one can relate to? If you see a bad black character in a movie or game and you are happy that at least that character is black than you are the cancer. Spike Lee would agree with this. - Jan 10, 2012 3:50 pm GMTRebel852 posted...

I wouldn't call you a racist (even though there are some quick to throw out that word...), and Spike Lee is a moron.
To me, there are only four (maybe more.) good black superheroes: Spawn, War Machine, Steel, and Storm... Everyone else amounts to crap to me including John Stewart.
Hal > Kyle > Kilowogg > Guy = John... In my opinion.
The thing is that next to no one is being pressured to make an ethnic superhero it just progressed out like Heller's final design.
And I am not saying you are wrong, in fact you speak on a similar tune to many who feel the same way.
I am still wanting Mercer to be the main character but with the marketing they have been doing with Heller the best I can hope for is DLC.

You somewhat confirmed my statement... there were many reasons all over the Internet ony why Zoey outranks Rochelle in every category and only a few were consistent. To many, Zoey falls closer to the "nerdy" girl next door while Rochelle is just... a reporter with clumsy jokes and dry sarcasm... and she wears a Depeche Mode shirt.
While I am in the group of Zoey > Rochelle, I can say that more males would date a girl like Zoey than a girl like Rochelle. (I think a Latin girl would outrank them both if introduced in L4D3, ...not really but it could happen.)
I am still having trouble seeing people relating to a yellow monster who has a bottomless stomach pit and consumes ghosts when they are blue, An Italian plumber with a fire breathing turtle problem, a elf guy who is mainly nameless but has a constant problem with pig-wizards and having his female counterpart kidnapped by said pig-wizard for ~20 games.

Most recently George Lucas was on the daily show talking about his new movie Red Tails and how hard it was to get funding for the movie because it has an all black cast. It's hard to Believe the STAR WARS creator could not even get people to invest in his product.
This Speaker talks about the George Lucas interview in detail and pretty much says what you and I are talking about, and Also adds some very interesting stuff. (click on the first video titled "Inner Honesty"
He talks about it from the 5 min mark to about the 18 min mark. VERY interesting stuff.
http://macklessonsradio.com/ - Jan 12, 2012 9:12 am GMTI'll make a retraction to my earlier post, about 70% of all black superheroes are terrible, while I'll add to my tolerable black superhero list: Blade, Vixen (with Caucasian facial features.), Black Lightning/Static Shock (same guy pretty much...) and Ultimate Nick Fury. I only recognize one Spider-Man and his name is Peter Parker, everyone else is just filler.
The Latino/Hispanic and Asian should have more dominance in the superhero division, because they are more well recieved to the target audience than Blacks are, but there are only a few well known ones such as: Ultimate Iron Man, Kyle Rayner, The current Blue Beetle, and Katana.
Rebel maybe somewhat right, but they aren't being forced to change racial identities and whatnot and I can say that it is all Brian Michael Bendis's fault that the Ultimate Universe is getting a racial overhaul.

Static Shock is actually more like Spiderman. A kid with powers having to deal with school, bullys, girl problems and saving the world. Black Lightning and Static shock are both black and both have the same powers but the similarities stop there.
And I am curious to see what they do with the new ultimate Spiderman. We already have a peter parker in the 616, I want to see what happens when someone else dons the costume.

Well there was the Atom who was an Asian legacy hero for a while and the fans loved him. But then DC had to go and kill him off.. ON ASIAN HISTORY MONTH >.<
I am more of a marvel guy than a DC, but both sides have their problems with Black Superheros. As a Matter of fact DC's problem is Marvel's strong point and Marvel's Problem is DC's Strong point.
DC's problem is that all their most popular black superheros got their powers from or are lackeys of the white ones. And it's always some object that gives them their power and can be easily taken away. Vixen and her stupid totem, Jakeem thunder and his stupid Genie Pin, John Stewart and his Green lantern ring which Hal Jordan gave him, Steel and his robotic Armor, Green Specter and the stupid specter essence he needs to change into the Specter. All of these things can be taken away at any time where as Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and most of the white Superheros powers come from themselves. However DC's strong point is that the Black Superheros are just as powerful as the white ones.
Over at Marvel it is the total opposite. The Black Superheros at Marvel all have their own powers and abilities, but they are never as powerful as the white superheroes for some reason. However that is slowly changing.
I have to say the only ones I care for are Blade, Black Panther, Monica Rambu, Blue Marvel, Storm, Luke Cage (every now and then) and Spawn.

This does not bother me in the least. Again, if nonwhites can set around and have fun with white characters and support them, there is no reason that we can't support and have fun with nonwhite characters. I hate that every time a nonwhite character pops up it's somehow pandering or some one being forced into it. How full of yourself are you to think that just because a creator is white they had to be forced into creating something different from the norm. I guess George Lucas was Forced into making Redtails somehow. I guess Radical was forced into making Heller a black man. Come on with that crap.....

I hate conspiracy people. This guy is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from that. The easy way to tell a conspiracy nut from some one who is telling the truth is that the conspiracy nut will usually start to pull on some odd religious non sense to get people to believe them at some point.
I was skeptical of this particular guy at first but he really talks about some very interesting things and after I did some research of my own about the things he talks about my jaw was on the floor. Some things sound like some Saturday morning cartoon plot from an episode of Gi joe or something, but then you look the stuff up and find out it really did happen and its like wow.

There are certain things in place that have been in place for a very long time in order to keep the status quo. In order to keep everyone regardless of race thinking a certain way. This is why it took so long for occupy wall street to happen. occupy wall street should have happened 30-40 years ago, but that is another story. I don't think everyone is out to get black people, but I also am not foolish enough to think that everything is a coincidence.

Yet people will still make excuses for why they prefer some one they cannot relate to who happens to be white as opposed to some one they can't relate to who happens to be black. It never fails... - Jan 16, 2012 6:30 am GMTI know you may have noticed that many of my posts I contradict myself. That was intentional, many of my opinions have more holes in it than General Custer.
My reasons for disliking Rochelle are quite shallow, I really hate the way she screams whenever she is incapped or beaten (thank you mute button...) as opposed to Francis's screams which I find hilarious.
About the black superheroes thing, I have no preference or percentage of "tolerability" on the heroes that I am reading as long as he/she is entertaining. I know the difference between Static and Black Lightning, but they like the others are underrated due to lackluster storytelling. I don't hate John GL, it was more of a WTF to me when I grew up with Hal.
Honestly, my other "opinions" are just thrown out there to pass time or to get a response, other than the occasional "passersby" and the video posters this board is at a stand still.
P2 releases in less than 100 days and the hype is low, Radical may want to pull out all of the stops if they want the people who crapped all over Prototype to sing a different tune.
tl;dr - I was psuedo-trolling. - Jan 18, 2012 5:01 am GMTIn my last statement I meant the biased parts and not the neutral observations.
George Lucas wouldn't get funding even though a lot his works have produced a lot of profit but as that clip in "Mack Lessons" had pointed out, Hollywood does not see Red Tails as a profitable World War II depiction, while Saving Private Ryan had a cast that draws in people who share the same views as Rebel while the Tuskegee Airman doesn't sound as thrilling as a movie that takes place in the front lines. Simply put, If Lucas didn't think it world work he would have dropped it.
B. Bendis isn't the only man to bring "racial changes" into Marvel, but he is the face of it IMO.
While I previously said it would work if you switch characters in any form of media, I meant the audience would accept it.
Taking Gears for example again, The main four could fit into each others positions while keeping most of their unique qualities, but the worldwide social acceptance role says otherwise... Marcus could fit into Cole's role (bad example but think of Elpresador with Cole-isms), Cole could fall into Dom's position as the *spoilers* Widower *spoilers* (Which does get associated in a lot of media like books and movies.), Dom could be the Brilliant Mechanic (The Latino/Hispanic mechanic has been represented as "smarter-than-most" for many times.) and Baird... He could be Marcus, but he is just Baird.

Really, Saving private Ryan had a white cast. So yes they are more likely to get behind and advertize that film. Like was said in "Mack lessons radio" These studios can get behind Redtails and advertize it and give the audience permission to like it just the same as they did with The film The Help. There is absolutely nothing about the help,The Blind side, Precious, or Hustle and flow that makes them worthy of all the advertizing they got except the fact that the blacks were in an inferior position in those films and white audiences respond well to that. Simply put, white Audiences prefer movies where the blacks are portrayed as inferior, and not saving the day.

Don’t forget movies that re-enforce stereotypes like “How High”, but not everyone in the white audience want to see a black man fail. Ice Cube’s “Friday” seemed to be well received in both the white and black audiences. It really goes back to the “if you ain’t funny, you ain’t worthy” argument doesn’t it?
I don't relate to any character in any video game, movie, book, rendition, or any media like that. I just enjoy the character for way they are. Comments similar to "the character shares the same skin tone as me, so I relate to him better.", My response "...Wat? ^ Prototype's International fans are even less receptive than the American ones, Deviant-Arts Mercer fans are insane, if Heller was a living person I am certain he would be sentenced to death for breathing. I am still a Mercer fan through and through, but I also like Heller a lot more now than a year ago.
I wonder how Desmond Miles captured the “relation” to his fans, he is multiracial after all. I also am not seeing as many complaints on ScarF-… Rico Rodriguez, he is an awesome Latino action character I guess that is why.
