Looks like a beta that was sitting on the shelf since the early 90's

I liked Proteus a lot, but I think I got more emotionally out of Dear Esther.

So will I be left feeling just as empty inside as my half hour play-through of Dear Esther?

@Kevin-V Does this game actually have an ending or do you just stop exploring when you feel like it? Thanks.

@LE5LO @Kevin-V The game has a definite ending.  There is a story to the game, so it's more than just an exploration game - there is a narrative told through each play through.

@gadzy@Kevin-V  Awesome. Sad it's doing something new and coping criticism for it :/

God bless the indies that made this, and the guys at Capy and Thatgamecompany, we'd never see something like this from any of the big studios ;)

Hmm, I see myself want this as my phone "interactive-background app" than an actual PC game. It will be an awesome distraction on the move.

Looks nice, but Superbrothers Sword & Sworcery EP is a much better choice for those interested in this kind of thing. Same 8-bit indie style, much better audio, and it actually has gameplay elements! Get it on steam

@FeedMe2daForest  I've finished Sword & Sworcery EP on Steam with the only achievemnet I haven't got being the ''cheater one- my profile names: le5lo

Even if people ''interested in this kind of thing" it looks like a completely different experience so I don't see the need to advertise Superbrothers here. I understand what you're saying though, but really it seems like you're comparing apples to oranges.

Anyway Sword & Sworcery EP is good, I can't disagree on that. This looks like something else entirely though, and also looks very interesting for different reasons.

Looks like SKYRIM the 1990 Version lol

@scottenman2005If Skyrim had the colorful 8-bit styled graphics of Proteus I definitely would've enjoyed it more.

I miss the charm of the early 90's, now days so many games are obsessed with dreary and oppressive environments. I still like Skyrim, but the bleakness of the world is really depressing :/

Games like this are the reason i love the PC indie scene. Developers are free to experiment and create unique and interesting games without pressure from major publishers to make yet another grey and brown military shooter. I've had more fun with games like Terraria and  Super Meat Boy than i have with any COD or Halo.

However, although Proteus does look interesting i prefer my games to have more gameplay and interaction so i'll stick to Planetside 2 and Strike Suit Zero for the time being.

I wouldn't call this a game, but it's artistic merit is certainly intriguing, I may pick it up if it goes on sale on steam

I'm in to trying new things... but this is just ridiculous. I don't even know why this game got a review... is it even a game? And its currently in the top 10.... Reallyy!!!

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It seems lovely, but I think I would get bored, even given that I love environments and story.

I'm reminded of those augmented reality devices used on patients recovering from burns and other injuries. The games those devices use are crude but Proteus seems like a good game for augmented reality.

That night scene is gorgeous and ambient. Might pay five bucks for this, like a low-bit version of Dear Esther.

Seriously, how did this score an 8/10? This looks and feels like something the Atari 2600 could have done.

@Chemistian "This looks and feels like something the Atari 2600 could have done."

Really? An Atari 2600 running at 60FPS or higher, and displaying in 1080p or higher?

No...just a modern computer ;)

Think of this as an 8-bit Dear Esther, just not as "scary". There's no actual gameplay, but rather the exploration of an area.

Something tells me the enjoyment of this game goes up exponentially when playing under the influence of certain paraphernalia....

LE5LO
LE5LO

@UpInSmoke0803 You're influenced by certain 'paraphernalia'?

I think the term you're looking for is certain 'psychedelic drugs' that can be used with your paraphernalia, as the paraphernalia alone would yield little to no result, unless you like to drink bong water, but I would hardly recommend that.

However the psychaedelic drug alone without paraphernalia could increase enjoyment, and can still be taken in a variety of ways with simply a willing mind and mouth, nose or veins to put it in. ;)

I gotta admit - it's hard to spend our already limited time on a game without real purpose.  Having a starting point and an ending point is essential for many activities in life (not just games).  Even musical form has a distinct harmonic structure that constantly pulls the listener to the final conclusion or destination of the musical phrase.

That being said - I like the idea of making gamers use their senses to experience a game world.  Without the distraction of quests, combat, or puzzles - you are encouraged to utilize more complex brain functions than - go to point A or B - or kill monster A or B.

Still...I can't find much reason to play this personally.  Even if I got it really cheap - I'd rather spend my time to take a walk in the real world.  After all - time is the universal nonredeemable resource.  And this seems like a waste of my time.

Same goddamn hypocritical BS, as per usual. People always go 'wtf not another CoD, make something new!' and are now like 'wtf is this, this is no game it's a piece of shit'

See this is exactly the reason why developers can't or will not try too many new things. I applaud these guys for creating something that's different.

Oh well, I guess most of the bashers will learn once puberty hits...

poypoy72
poypoy72

@Aydenuille So you're saying that developers can just create the art design that has been done before, add a couple of sounds from games like Sword & Sorcery, and a couple of mine craft weather effects and call it "different". I'm sorry, but this is what this game is. It isn't ground breaking and it really isn't that different. That style has been done before.
The devs are probably laughing at everyone saying "hahaha, we couldn't come up with a way to actually interact with this world that would be exiting and intense so we'll just let people wonder around and excuse it for being Indie!" You don't have to make CoD, as you said, but it's not like this game did anything all that special either.

Aydenuille
Aydenuille

@poypoy72@AydenuilleOk, I see your point about it not being that new or special, but I find it a nice diversion from the usual. Even though it has been done before, I myself can still appreciate it. Hell I like all genres besides sportsgames, and I still enjoy CoD from time to time. That said, if you look closely, I never said they have to stop making CoD :) My beef is just that the level of hypocrisy these days is over the top. Especially with these kind of games. And it's a shame that the negative voice is always the loudest, because when developers here those negative tones they get scared and think 'we won't try that again'. I'm not trying to say this is the best game I've ever played, I'm just glad devs still try to do this, and it's sad then that people bash on it for the wrong reasons. If someone doesn't like it, that's perfectly fine, but say why and don't generalize it by saying it is shit.

'The devs are probably laughing at everyone saying "hahaha, we couldn't come up with a way to actually interact with this world that would be exiting and intense so we'll just let people wonder around and excuse it for being Indie!"

Maybe. But maybe the game was meant to feel and play this way. Wouldn't that be a nicer thought?

@Aydenuille probably the biggest problem in the gaming industry right now is that hardly anybody, not the gamers, and especially not the developers, want a game thats not some kind of entertainment product. Movies that have no action can still be considered good but if you don't spend 80% of a game killing things suddenly nobody takes it seriously

JazzFromHell

@eLite0101 this isn't art at all but it's a very cool idea to develop a more "complete" game, I prefer games like this instead of the old shooter sh*t.

eLite0101
eLite0101

@JazzFromHell @eLite0101 I`m all for new ideas and non-shooter games but there still must be something to do. When first indie games started to appear it was something amazing, but now it seriously starting to get silly.
