Finally completed my first playthrough (got the true ending already... So sad ;_ and there's one little thing that might have been all a figment of my imagination... But since I played through the whole thing with a friend of mine and she swears she noticed the same thing, I have some doubts. In chapter 5 (I think), when you go to the Kureha Shrine for the first time, the ghost hands that appear when trying to grab items were definitely different from usual... They looked and sounded more demonic, and the sound they made in particular was very different. I thought something was up with them, but when I went back in chapter 8, they were normal. Did we just imagine everything or are they really programmed like that?

The ghost hands are different. Some or quicker than others. I think the best way to know i they're faster or slower is by the way they look. What I noticed was that hands that were just normal, i.e no scratches and stuff like that were generally slower than those who had a lot scratches and cuts.

I see, and was it a coincidence that I only found the quicker ones in Kureha shrine or do they really only appear there?

I'm pretty sure that each hand is area specific but appear randomly for each item.

What you saw was indeed a "darker" ghost. They drain a lot more health than the usual hand-grabbing ones (they're more scarier too) and on the higher difficulty settings they'll kill you for sure.

It was actually pretty scary, despite me being able to dodge all the hands anyway (thank God for the disc-spinning cue). Heck, Kureha Shrine in general is scary, despite being a single small room. My friend nearly flipped out when the enemy priest in chapter 8 started throwing ghost heads at Mio.

Are you talking about Man in Dark"s hand? later in the game ghosts will actually grab Mio and dissapear instead of just normal hands.
