Video Game novels

by on

Video games came into being, that is , they were available to the masses about 1978. Odyssey owners will tell you otherwise but the Odyssey was soon replaced by the Atari and/or the Intellivision. The industry has progressed greatly from those days of 24% inflation, Jimmy Carter sending US jobs for the 1st time ever, and the dying days of disco. But it is still evolving. That was 34 years ago and I'm aware that most of you were not here 34 years ago. So to speak of those days is to speak of ancient history that one cannot relate to.

But a quick look around Amazon or very large bookstore will soon show gamers a number of novels devoted to a game they may have played. One of my favorite series of books (there were 3) were the books that tied in to Myst. These weer done back when novelization of video or computer games was done correctly. Not that we do not have good novels released today, but so many of them are just fan feeder for the gamer who loves a particular game.

Here is the 1st book, a prequel, in the Myst series . Now for those of you who may have missed playing this game i strongly advise you to play at some time. It is almost a prerequisite to gaming 101. Notice that Rand and Robin Miller, the creators of Myst assisted i the writing of this novel . The original publication was 1995.

A recent example of a great prequel novel is Bioshock. Another I highly advise fans of the series , or just video game fans in general , to read.

As one can see it is still available on Amazon.

But the point is: do video games enhance the overall gaming experience or do they deter from it. I find the prequels to be most interesting because they tell the back-story of the game. They can provide the reader, the gamer, background info that the game does not have time to delve into. (Final Fantasy VII may be the exception). The Bioshock novel for instance, involves the building of Rapture from the seafloor up to how it was inhabited. And a lot more.

The two other novel formats are not as interesting to me. One is the format where the events take place AFTER the main story quest has ended. One the other is the one where one is to read the book while playing the title. These novesl are few and far between. ICO is the best example I can think of.

Again, thanks goes to Amazon.

The Diablo novel was good. "The Book of Cain" which is $35 dollars is a bit to steep for my liking. But it looks to be so awesome. I always loved Deckard Cain in the Diablo games. He's old ,like me, and has a great memory and can relte story or tale very well.

My son who has read the Mass Effect novels tells me they are OK.

But to writers and editors this genre is a challenge. How does tell the tale, before or after? How to balance the main characters with the background characters. Plus the book hads to be wrote in suck a way so as not to ruin the plot line for gamers who may not have played the title.Or, if the novel occurs after the main storyline, the author must be very careful not to release info that could be used in a sequel.

So do they add or detract. Only you , the gamer, answer that.Only you know how hardcore a fan you are of a series. Video games have along way to evolve. So do the novels of them. It will be interesting to see what state the gaming industry is in 34 years from now, 2012. Rest assured that there wil stil be a PC somewhere that still plays ZORK!!

It is my son's game and i had to wait for him to openit and install it. But now that he has we both like it. I beleive it is as good as a lot said it was last year. I just wish I had done some things earlier in the title.

That and Bioshock 2 are taking up my time now. I have yet to set up an actua money account on my diablo game. But i want to . And i have no day job, I'm actually looking for work. So I don'y have to worry about quitting it.

I hope all of you are well and that you have some grand plans for the Summer. Because it coming to an end. Shortly. It bites? I know. But make the best of it. Come back to gaming when it gets colder!

Hello all,

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying this beautiful Summer weather. Except for my friends below the equator. Take heed, Fall will soon be here which means you will soon have Spring! In the meantime, stay warm!

This last week and this weekend is rather noteworthy to the residents of Somerset Pa where i live. First off the USS Somerset was christened yesterday. A lot of local people went down to Louisiana to see it. it's unfortunate that such a tragic event had to happen for us to get a ship named after the county.

This last week and this weekend was also the 10 anniversary of the 9 miners being rescued form the mine that they got themselves trapped in 10 years ago. It's impossible to live around and not know one of those 9, or their relations. The Governor at the time, Mark Schweiker was such a great governor and was here , helping, sleeves rolled up, every day that the rescue efforts went on. For those not familiar with this event i would encourage you to read about it! it is a fascinating story of man's ingenuity!

Triple points for Red Dead Redemption is also going on today. Get your boots and spurs out and go back to the old west and gather some experience.

Bil O'Reilly's column this morning was titled "Where were you in '62?". He goes on to speak a little of how times have changed and what was going on. And what he was up to. It got me to thinking where I was in '62. 50 years ago. Man that was a while past. Before JFK was assassinated, but after the Bay of Pigs. I would be getting ready to enter 1st grade in the fall. Stamps were 6 cents. A loaf of bread was 29 cents. The good stuff 34 cents. Gas was under a half dollar/gallon. Coke and pepsi were 10 cents/bottle in machines, and there were no steel or aluminum cans drinks. The aluminum can for drinks was not invented yed. So Coke, Pepsi, Upper 10, Tab--all in bottles. And very few things has expiration dates. Dairy and meat and not even all of dairy.

But I know where i was in '81, the year this sweetie was born. And for those of you who have made it this far-here is your reward:

Adriana Lima

Like it.Love it. Love to like it or like to love it .Either way is good. And if your opinion is somewhere else- i don't care.

Wecome to random Adriana Lima pic #1.

Have a great week Ladies and gentlemen.

Ramdom Musings from a Worldy Sage!

by on

Hello to all. I hope this day finds you well and in good, or as good as can be expected, health. Right Then, let's get started.

First off, if you are iowastate you may as well turn around and get out right now. With no hard feelings. See I may post some "scantily clad women" in this blog and I don't need you writing one of yours telling the world what they WON't see in yours. A direct verbal attack at me, and others. Shame on you for the backhanded way you did that. But this sage has no hard feelings.

Now that tha's out the way. I would like to address the waste of time which is The Dark Knight Rises. I won't review it. But i will tell you to save your money. And before any of you tell me idon't know my head from 3rd base, let me tell you that I was born in 1957 when the creator of Batman was still doing the comic. I grew up on comics. So I do know my head and 3rd base.

This film SHOULD have been! It should be a "can't miss" film. The acting is stupendous! The cast

MV5BMTkxMzk4MjQ4MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzExChristian Bale...Bruce WayneMV5BMTc3NTM4MzQ5MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTE4Gary Oldman...Commissioner GordonMV5BMTU1MTc3Nzk0N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDcyTom Hardy...BaneMV5BMTc4ODc3NDk5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTkzJoseph Gordon-Levitt...BlakeMV5BMjAyODQ0NTI2Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTkxAnne Hathaway...SelinaMV5BMTM0Njg1MzAxOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNTExMarion Cotillard...MirandaMV5BMTc0MDMyMzI2OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzM2Morgan Freeman...FoxMV5BMjAwNzIwNTQ4Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMzE1Michael Caine...AlfredMV5BMTI3NTUyNDI5Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTQzMatthew Modine...Foley

re all excellent in their roles. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caince deserve an oscar! Their roles were that GOOD. But good is something the film is not. Slow , lackluster and lethargic describe it. The story is terrble. The screenplay is terrible. The directing is ,well, you know. Thr music is good, as always, and it sets the mood. but the film never delivers. DC should have handed the story, thescript and the direction over to Frank Miller. It would have gotten an R rating then, but it would have been GOOD! As is I would it a 3 or possibly 4 out of 10. No---3.

Musically I'm liking all the 25 and 69 cent downloads Amazon is having. And a number of Albums are $2.99. Sure some are older. But great music is great music. It's Summertime here where i am.Put some Summer jams into your player. And for a sweet price!

Lastly, I'm tired of hearing about next gen systems. People, the gen we have now is fine. The games are still challenging enough.they are still fun. But greedy companies (software companies) want the next gen so they can charge confiscatory prices to the gamers. Prices YOU can't afford.Neither can I Sony and Microsoft don't want them. They are going to lose money on consoles. And it will be a few years until they start making enough in software sales to offset the costs of the console. In his heart of hearts, you can be sure jack Tretton is in no hurry to rush a PS4 to market.

People, be happy with what you have. Howevec, there is an inherant flaw of human nature. People will never be happy with what they have. The big 3 could release a virtual reality consoles tomorrow and gamers would want--demand more. They would demand to be warped to the actual location of the game itself. (Should that be possible)

The world ecomomy is not doing well. Unemploymext and consumer confidense is near an all time low. Evcen the rich are saving more, in preparation for possib;e bad days to come. Not the best time to be thinking of bringing out next gen systems.

Lastly I leave you with this: (and The Pervy Sage from Naruto, Jiraiya would like these!!!!!!!!)

It's missing that "WOW!" factor

by on

This is what I am talking about

Diablo 3 Tyrael for LG Rumor

This isn't missing that WOW factor!

maxim3.bmp

However I like Diablo 3. I find it enjoyable and fun to play. Even though at times I feel like I am still playing the 1st or 2nd title. But i don'r believe the title warrants the beating it is taking by some gamers and also some critics.

But it's not the game it could have/should have been. It is simply missing what I call the "WOW" factor. I shall explain.

What distinguishes a great game from a good game is the WOW factor of the game. Some have it -some don't.Final Fantasy VII had Aerith dying and being absorbed into the lifeforce Gamers still remember and talk about that today. And about how they felt when it happened. A WOW moment. FF VIII had no WOW moments. And in the day it was considered as good as VII. But time has a way of setting things right and today FF VIII is largely a forgotten title.

Usually the WOW moments occur as part of cutscenes. Sometime not-and sometime a little of each. In Modern Warfare 2. When you are climbing the rope to get to your ride--that's you. But the explosion of the and the bombing seconds later is not you. But that was a (say it with me) a WOW moment. The ending was not one because, face it, you still did not get the Russian!!!

Bioshock and both InFamous titles have them. Anyone remember a little game played with pistols in Black Ops?

But I have yet to see on e of those in Diablo 3. This is somewhat annoying. I loved the Butcher fight in the first Diablo. (Easy if you had a bow. I can do it taking no damage) And whilw the Butcher is harder in Diablo 3 I does'nt "WOW!!". The first did!

adriana_lima.jpg

WOW!

WOW!!!-----and----

That's Right.WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's it for now.Let me know what you are playing and whether you feel like playing a video game or (Ahem) perhaps looking for more photos Adriana Lima! Be sure to give Diablo 3 a chance!

Peace out Keep it real!

Father's Day 2012

by on

Father's day is upon us again. Seem as if the older one gets the shorter the years get. If you are still young, enjoy your "long" years.

Happy Father's Day to all of the Father's out there. Same to all the Ladies perform who have to also be the "father" in their child's life. The exact reverse should also be said of the men who also perform the role of "Mother" . There are millions of you out there.

Tonight my son gave me his Father's Day gift. I received Trails of the Sky Limited Edition for the PSP. Also Arc Rise fantasia for the Wii-which I had wanted since forever ago. (since it was announced) . Both are brand new factory sealed titles. I'm very happy and surprised.

Tomorrow I am going out to eat with my Son and my Daughter at Ruby Tuesday's. That sounds like a shrimp meal to me! YUM!

In conclusion remember to respect and honor your Father not just tomorrow but every day. The work Father' s do is often unappreciated. Tomorrow take time to offer appreciation for all the things he does or had done . It will mean the world to him. If that means putting your personal feelings then so be it.

Live.Love.Laugh. --is as true for the guys as it is the girls!

Memorial Day 2012

by on

I don't want to get into the habit of being a "event only" blogger. But it seems as if that's how I've become(Mother's day, Christmas, Birthday, and now again). However my life is just to boring to speak of much else. Besides I'm on Google + WAYYY mre than I am here. I get a lot of responses and +1's daily there . Here 3 or 4 folks read and comment on my blog.

It's Memorial Day again. Time for those of us in the US to remember those who have fought and gave their all in past wars. The countless faces that have died so thet we may live as we do today. The sacrifices are too great to count and the debt to those families who lost loved ones can never be repaid. The gratitude of millions will have to suffice.

The weekend celebrations are 1/2 over and I hope your celebration has been grand! It 's raining outside ATM . I hope those who had evening plans got their events in before the storms came. It seems as if we can never get through a Memorial Day weekend where I live WITHOUT storms. The Ink Spots "Into Each Life some Rain must Fall" comes to mind. And too much is falling in mine.

Ok, So the last two don't have much to do with memorial Day. But I know there are some Rihanna fans that appreciate her pic.

And she's a Diablo 3 fan! Big plus there.

Mother's Day 2012

by on

AudreyFirst Off Happy Mother's Day to all the Mother's or Mother's to be! It's your day so be sure to enjoy it. And by all means be sure those around you do for YOU today- as a Mother you do enough for others the rest of the year!

A nice brunch or buffet may be nice.Or perhaps an afternoon to just relax and do whatever you want to do-free of intrusions.

Ladies, there is also the spa appointment that you made for your Mother and yourself at a later date. Nice touch-great Mother's Day gift. Men, you can also remember that a spa session is a great gift fot your Wife, GF, or Mother. She will appreciate getting relaxed and rejuvinated more than any flowers.

Coco Chanel once said:

"A Girl should be two things-Classy and fabulous"

That was as true in 1920 as it is today. Everyone should rememebr to treat the women in life a just such--not just on Mother's day but EVERYDAY!

And speaking of classy I give you Audrey Hepburn.Quite possibly the one actress that understood that sentiment better than anyone else.

Forgotton History

by on

As I write this it is May 8th. it is evening time where I am at and I started to think back upon all the recent past events that are largely going forgotten. Recent events we tend to keep in our mind but those events that transpired 2 or 3 generations ago we tend to forget.

I understand that none of you, the readers, were alive when these events happened. But they were and still are noteworthy. Forgotten History if you will.

With today being May 8th. That would make it V-E Day. Or Victory in Europe Day. (some G.I's at the time called it"Victory OVER Europe") it is the day the Allied powers forced an unconditional surrender of the Nazis and brought Hitler's third Reich to a resounding end. To those who may not remember the US at the time was fighting two separate battles. The battle in Europe against the Nazis and their those who assist them in their efforts. As well as the war in the Pacific against in the Imperialist forces of Japan--who actually started WW 2 when attacking Pearl Harbor.

V-E Day and V-J Day were taught in school at one time and I remember that we had to learn and remember them. But today we celebrate Veteran's Day and the previous two are largely ---forgotten. Let us remember them here preserve the memory of that great day!

V-E Day took place in 1945. But let us go back farther--to 1937.

On May 6th 1937 the Hindenburg exploded into a fiery mass of metal and bodies over Lakehurst Naval Air Station,NJ as it was attempting to land. This video link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgWHbpMVQ1U shows the scope and magnitude of the disaster. It brought the age of dirigibles to an end. At the time dirigibles were consider a luxury way to travel in the air. Commercial airplane traffic was not a very feasible method. Nor would it be until 1947-1048. The Hindenburg disaster happened 10 years earlier. The Hindenburg was the elite of all the Zeppelin's and Zeppelin traffic was popular and on the rise. Until this.

While growing up I had become very familiar with Herbert morrison's audio of the disaster. I present that for you on this link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiAT9xvTVKI I have heard that audio a few hundred times and I brings chills to me even this day.

We see Zeppelins during outdoor sporting events and usually the game commenter tells who provided to blimp of the aerial coverage. But at one time----------This------was THE way to travel in the air!

Lastly there is the sinking of the Titanic. THAT IS REMEMBERED! But the Lusitania (another ship) is not and the events I have described above almost have faded from memory. That will be a sad day when they do. I hope I do not live to see it.

Take some time daily to reflect on the past on hope for the future. The past helped define who (and why) you are now. The future who you will become.

I leave you with this. take a few moments today to silently thank and think of those who gave so much in the Great War to preserve your way of life here in the US. We have since learned much of what went on at Nazi concentrtion camps. That would have spread to our shore also had it not been for those brave veterans a long time ago!

A Great Early Birthday

by on

I swore a year ago that I would do no more birthday posts or blogs regarding me. Wishing my friends Happy Birthday, that's different story. But somehow celebrating your own by shouting it all over the web seems a tad bit vain. Especially the 2ND or 3rd time around.

Tomorrow, the 11Thof March is my actual Birthday but because of working schedules in my family i received my gifts to day. Not many-butI consider them to be VERY NICE! My daughter and her husband got me "Retro Game Challenge" for the DS. I started gaming in the 70's so the 80's just feel natural to me. But to me the 80's were as much about the NES as they were about the Atari Computers, the Commodore 64 and 128, text adventures, and the Atari VCS and 5200.

My Mother, who always insists on getting me a gift. gave me some money. I purchased SMT-Devil Survivor 2 for the DS. Ahh... a brand spanking(I love that work--spanking--just has ring to it. Makes me chuckle deviously when I hear it)new SMT game. I'll start it tonight.

My son and my wife went together to get me a new book to read-- "Abraham Lincoln-Vampire Hunter". I am almost at the end of volume 1 of "The Hunger Games" so I will need new reading material. My previous book was the Historical thriller "Killing Lincoln". Very highly recommended my friends. A great read and very entertaining.

Also they got me "Kingdoms of Alamur" for the PS3. But what about Skyrim my friends which I have been heavily into? ARRGGHH.. Gaming choices can be so DIFFICULT sometimes.

So there it is. My self-sufficing little birthday blog that i should not have wrote. But did. I know alot of you are Pisces just like myself so I hope you have or have had a Happy Birthday!! I received a humorous Birthday card comparinf how Dad's are different fro Obama. perhaps I'll share that sometime. Very funny!

Take Care and God Bless AllXO
