I've become a hermit...

After all these years of console fun, I finally decided that it is time to build myself a new rig. I've gamed on my laptop for the last 6 years, but it finally starts to become dated. With the new consoles coming up later this year, I had quite a dilemma making this choice. Furthermore, I had to start from scratch, because I don't have even a mouse or keyboard to connect...but, the doubts are over. I've ordered my parts yesterday and will build a new rig with a budget of 1400 euro's. For that money, I get myself a Windows 7 driven tower with an i5 3570, 8 gigs of ram, a SSD/HDD hybrid, a GTX680 2Gb and a low budget screen, mouse, dvd drive and keyboard etc...enough to start with. Maybe when next gen is kicking off I'll consider myself a new console, but I'm affraid that, since I'm turning 35, it will be my kids who will take over the consoles...and then I'll stay a hermit forever...

The end of the year is coming...

...It's that time of the year again. You know, once september comes around, games start popping out again and it's time to spend some serious time behind the console or PC. Console, this time, with so many interesting things coming out!! At first, I was only going to get dark Souls OR Skyrim, but now I want Resistance 3, Rage, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim AND Dark Souls. Maybe even more. Time to raise the trophies from 1150 to 1500!! I better go and play some Starcraft 2 and The Witcher, because I'm going to need to finish these fast before the PS3 storm comes around!!

Merry Christmas

I wish every fellow gamer and his family and friends amerry christmas ! We here in Belgium (Europe) have a white christmas this year, which hasn't happened in 46 years ! Ho ho ho !

The game of the year 2010 is...Starcraft !

Old school gaming . There's just something inside me that cannot hold me back from playing those old games from the stone age over and over again . However, there has always been one black hole inside my memories that hadn't been filled up until recently... I bought the original Starcraft ! Funny, because I went to the store and had part 2 in my hands, realizing that I never played the first part . So I bought the "greatest hits" collection for $10 with the expansion set Brood Wars and became addicted to what must have been one of the world's greatest universes ever created . Yes, the cutscenes are old and the storytelling is mostly text, but the story is incredible . Now I've ended up playing the game non stop, leaving all my high end equipment in the dust . When I finish the expansion, I'll rush towards the store to buy Starcraft 2 immediately . Starcraft became the surprise of 2010 for me and I'll gladly give my GOTY award to it !!

My PS3 YLOD-ed !!

So...I am one of the unlucky ones who had their PS3 get the Yellow Light of Death . I must say that I didn't pay much attention to the problem before mine crashed . It never caused any problems before and it struck like lighning on a blue sky, or lets say thunderstorm . There you have it , your gaming ends and you'll start googling around to find answers to the why's . Then you realize the thing just died because it had to and you'll have two options . Getting a new one or taking the one you have apart . I chose to get a new one AND take the phat one apart . There wasn't much problems to be found inside, and everything looked really fine . No dust, no burned circuits or exploded components to be found . Even the thermal compound looked really fine ...I guess I'll try using some guides to clean the chips and bring new compound on to see what'll happen next .

Oh, and I found some interesting topics floating around here on the forums :

I really liked the first one because there you actually can prevent the problem to occur . I highly advice that to anyone, because losing 200 gigs on HD saves and stuff is NO FUN !!

No PS3 !! AAAAARGHH!!

Panic time . It's holiday times for me and disaster struck !! My television gave up , at least, it has problems . All out of nothing a vertical green stripe across the screen appeared . I have a Panasonic Viera TH42 and something . It was only two years old and never caused any problems before ! My local store took the tele back and gave me a substitute...without a HDMI interface !! Since my PS3 functions as a DVD, blu-ray and video games tool I am unable to use it anymore . What's more, I don't have the stuff to connect it via SDTV, and I can't lower myself to do so, either !! It's been two weeks since they've taken it, and I haven't heard anything yet . i searched forums etc. and found out that it is a known problem...that can't be solved at a low cost ...I am exited to see what will come out of this...

In the meantime, all I can do is play a little civilization 4 or Sup Com on my notebook ....

long time no see...

Hi, it's been a long time since I spend some time here on GS. That's because I got married, got another child (nr 3, it's a boy !!) and I bought a house recently . Not much spare time to spend then...

Anyway, the few spare moments I have go towards my playstation 3 lately .I really like Sacred 2 . It's far from being the perfect game, but for some reason, I really like it . reminds me a bit of Dungeon Siege . I also wanted to buy red Alert 3, but I'm afraid I won't like it ...I think RTS is a genre seeing a crisis right now...I hope Starcraft 2 can turn the tide for me . I don't like Resident Evil 5 anymore . Still have to play it one more time to get that fifth platinum trophy, but man, it will be a boring run . Getting all the guns upgraded isn't funny !

does anybody know if Resistance 2 is still being played online ? have to get a kill or 9500 in multiplayer...maybe I'll check out after the Rezie platie .

A little while ago I discovered a perfect intact super nintendo in my parents' cellar, complete with a game or 10 . The thing still works perfectly ! Playing a run of Zelda 3 or Castlevania 4 brings back sweet memories, but Ghouls and ghosts ended in the shelf after a brave 5 minutes ! How did I ever finish this game !! It's too hard !

So till the next time, fellow video game lovers ! And have a great vacation everyone !

Gamin' in the autumn...

It's been a while since I've been around at gamespot , so I decided to make a new blog . First of all, I don't have much time lately due to my work . The little spare time left I spend at my PS3 and Nintendo DS . Speaking of it, I really rediscovered the DS . It's actually a beautiful system with lots of hardcore games, something I hate Nintendo for with the Wii !! I've imported Contra4 (I love old school, and Contra has a big heart with me, especially part 3, which I remember playing to the bones with my best mate on hardest difficulty) . Anyway, the big consoles have to share my precious time with the DS . I've also just ordered Chrono Trigger, which I've NEVER played (yeah, shame on me, but that's going to change soon now) .

On to the big boys now, I've yet to buy Gears 2 and Fable 2 , but I have hands short with Dead Space, farcry2, Resistance2 and Wipeout HD . Man, Gamespot is so wrong with Wipeout . 7,5 ? Must be a joke, right !! I adore the game ! Zone is one of the most addictive game modes I've ever played in a race game . My record is 69 now, so the 75 trophy is coming soon...

Anyway, that's it for today, time's up... see you around !!

notebook is coffeed ...welcome again, pc games ...

I was browsing last week on the internet when I suddenly pushed over my cup of coffee over my notebook computer . It shut down immediately but there wasn't any fireworks or short circuitery . Hoping only a safety switch was cut off I dismantled the thing (an Asus notebook from 3 years ago, a very good piece of machinery btw) but hope faded soon as the thing was impossible to dismantle properly . The only thing I saw was lots of coffee . Of course the wife was quite upset as she didn't back up some photoos (around 5000) and lost an i-tunes library around $250 .

Anyway, the thing was toasted and didn't fire up anymore, also not after a night of drying . I bought a new notebook (had a little discussion if it would be a notebook-desktop), but as I got the last thing to say about our car, my wife decided to buy a new notebook . Fine by me, and it became a HP with an Intel core duo T8400 and an Nvidia M8600 GT GPU (the thing had 3 gigs of ram) . Quite a medium PC for today's standards in my humble opinion . As I was running XP before the whole Vista thing took some time to learn .

With a smile on my face I took some oldies out of the cupboard and installed them on my new piece of machinery and of course took the two power hungry beasts in my hand called Supreme Commander and Crysis, to see how they should abuse my new piece of hardware . crysis went quite well, with most settings on high and a reasonable resolution , but Supreme Commander surprised me once more .

First of all, the game didn't have any sound anymore, like nothing . After checking the internet and putting a post here on GS there wasn't anything to fix this . Secondly, when playing on high settings (shadows low and no AA) the thing started to go slow with 6 opponents on a medium map .

Weirdest issue of all, the expansion game plays with sound ... so I'm stuck with that . Not big an issue, because the expansion has everything and more than the original , but I didn't have the chance to try out the original campaigns .

Anyway, Supreme commander is such a great game . It is sooo hardcore and unforgiving...I just love it . It's a delight to see hundreds of units battling it out at once . This game makes the difference between console gaming and pc gaming, as the 360 version proved btw (it is rumoured that the new SC game is put on hold because there's absolutely no hardware that can handle the force) .

The PS3 and 360 are very energy friendly the last days now that I rediscovered PC gaming . I hope my notebook can run diablo3 and Starcraft 2 too . The which version of Red Alert 3 question is solved too...

No attack on the consoles btw, as my PS3 and 360 will soon fire off again ...

In the end I guess I'm a shapeshifter . I have my moments with all kinds of gaming ...PC, console, handheld (just finished the ff4 remake on DS, lovely) , I love gaming . It's a shame not everyone can enjoy gaming like I do ...

O and the wife became happy ever after, as I recovered the internal HDD and made it an external with the right tool . Hehe, mission accomplished...new computer for me in the process...
