since the ps4 is being revealed in the near future and nobody reads blogs anyways i thought i'd post my predictions and why i think they'll end up that way. the mists are parting from my third eye and i can see now.... it will be closer to the ps3.5.... it's going to have a stronger cpu and a slightly stronger gpu. it will allow more polygons on the screen (of course) which means more rounded edges, but we'll still have chunky wheels up close. more stuff will be able to be rendered on the screen and it will have better texture work, but none of it will be as good as the ps2 -> ps3 jump. we'll finally get actual 1080p games with aa.... it appears dx11 will be running on these games too. so basically, it's going to look and run a bit better than current gen but nobodys mind is going to be blown. my hazy predictions are - finally a party / chat system, in game dlc purchase that doesn't require leaving the game, better social interaction with a revamped version of pshome (i don't know why i'm just predicting) and a newer better pseye.
words from the crystal ball - now the reason i think that it won't be that big of a leap in terms of horsepower is that as we all know gpu's are where the money's at. you need a good cpu (and both ps & xbox will surely have one) but the gpu is where all the pretty graphics come from and it's pretty much guaranted that you'll never get a top top end gpu in a console because nobody wants to spend that much money on a console. NOW it will look better, but not semi CG / prerendered like i've seen some people claim. when it cuts to prerendered movies you'll still notice (ff 13 i'm looking at you) but all in all expect better lighting, texture and poly counts.
the other predictions are pretty obvious, if it wants to really be competitive w/ microsoft next gen then they'll need a voice chat system. the in game dlc purchase is another pretty obvious one, nobody wants to save, quit the game, sign in to the store, navigate the store menu to find the dlc, buy it, download and install it then restart the game. you might not realize it but you do all that stuff when you buy something. i think they're counting on the general publics sense of instant gratifaction to really sell tons of dlc when all you have to do in the game is walk up to the dlc point (the doors of a locked mine for example in an rpg) click on it, buy the content, wait a couple minutes for the download / install then continue on. the last one, the oddity, is the pseye. i think they're going to try to compete with microsofts kinect with a better pseye, i wouldn't be surprised to see a new eye with equivalent or better motion tracking than the kinect which would result in a much tighter hands free gaming expreience and might actually give dev's a good interface to work with in regards to gaming. i think everyone's seen that wands / nunchucks aren't the future of gaming. everyone wants to play hands free (i'd love to) but last i heard both psmove and kinect were pretty meh. the other thing i almost forgot is the revamped home. follow me on this, they already spent a lot of money making home right? revamp the current version (hd it in other words) add voice chat, expand it and make it into what it was supposed to be initially and BAM people might actually use it. think about it like this, in home instead of talking to people on a keyboard you just walk up and initiate conversation with your headset, kinda like in real life. i think things like that, things that make it more real lifey and "sim" esque could really help sell it and turn it into the platform they wanted it to be.
so good luck ps4, know that if you block used games i won't be playing.
