There really isn't a noticeable difference but the price. However, it never hurts to have your RAM and CPU running on a 1:1 ratio.

You could pick up 4GB of DDR2 800 RAM for about $20 less, but seeing how money's not a problem for you, I'd easily go with the DDR2 1066 RAM.

The HD4850 should average ~35fps at that resolution on very high.

Why not get an HD4870 for the same price, instead? The 4870 is superior compared to the GTX260.

Well, since you're majoring in a programming field, I'd seriously recommend a Q6600 instead of the dual-core you have there. It'll work better for compiling and pretty much everything else that's not gaming.

And for ~$15 more, you can get a HD3850 instead of that 8600GT. It's a better card overall, and it'll last longer.

The 420w PSU will be enough to power it all.

Do you already have a hard drive? There are 320GB ones going for ~$60, just in case.

The motherboard you chose is for enthusiasts, and unless you're planning on overclocking, it's not worth it. However, I'd seriously recommend OC'ing. If you couple the Q6600 with a third-party heatsink (for a cheap but good alternative, an Artic Cooling one should be great, but I'd easily recommend this one instead. You could go above 3.2GHz with no problems.).

Again, I tried to lower the price and installation-hassle as much as I could. He could do whatever you said, but it's really up to him.

You obviously expect him to overclock, yet you suggested a P35 board? Biostar makes a P45 board for the same price, so it'd be foolish not to get that instead.kodex1717
I'm not too fond with Biostar mobos, but a P35 is as good as a P45 motherboard, unless you want to go extreme with the OC'ing. Heck, why not a X48?

Also, why recommend the MSI card when the VisionTek card, with a lifetime warranty, is $5 less and comes with a free copy of Racedriver GRID?kodex1717
The VisionTek one comes overclocked. Check out the speeds.

EDIT: As for the case, the Cooler Master 690 is a good choice, but for $70 less, I think the Antec 300 is a better choice.kodex1717
I went with that CoolerMaster one because it had 4 fans. I initially was going tolink to the Lian-Li $90 one, but seeing as it only had 1 fan, and was trying to save him a few bucks, I went with that one.
