UPDATE - November 20, 2007 - It has been exactly one year to the date since this article was written. Please read on, because as you'll see, we were absolutely right in just about every point we made with this article.

As long as consoles have existed, discussions, debates, arguments, fights, and all out WARS have taken place over who makes the best video game units. Growing up, I was always a Nintendo fan boy; I didn't want to hear anything about Sega Genesis... In my mind, Nintendo had Mario, Zelda, and other great first-party titles. Sega had Sonic, and red blood.

Considering the size of this behemoth, weighing in at 15 pounds, we wouldn't really call it a laptop. Nevertheless, inspired by Ben Heck's PS3 laptop, another successful attempt at fitting the insides of a PS3 into a portable enclosure has surfaced. Specs are as follows:

  • 80GB SKU with 320GB HDD
  • 17" 720p HDTV LCD Monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Built-in speakers with headphone jack
  • Custom cooling (SilenX fans)
  • Size: 16" x 10.5" x 4" (when closed)
  • Weight: 15 pounds

With the success of this 3-month project, the modder known as Pirate plans to create a slimmer version in the future. Check it out in action after the jump.

While they're not supposed to "officially" go on sale until the end of this month, it appears that many retailers are stocking their store shelves with the new 80GB Core Packs. These systems, which retail for $399, offer an upgraded version of the previous 40GB system: a larger hard drive and a DualShock 3 controller. It does not, however, provide any backwards compatibility. Various tipsters have mailed us with reports of systems being on store shelves, and Ashhong from NeoGAF even posted a photo of one system.

If the new 80GB Core Packs are available, that means the two current PS3 SKUs both feature 80GB hard drives. The more expensive ($499)
80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle includes a copy of the popular stealth action game and offers backwards compatibility.

Update:SCEA rep Al de Leon tells us that "Shipments of the new 80GB PS3 started this week, and retailers can sell them as they receive the inventory." If your local store has the new 80GB system, they're allowed to sell it immediately.

160GB model also announced for America: $499, November release

The 160GB model announced at Leipzig today will also be coming to America in a new bundle featuring last year's blockbuster PS3 exclusive, Uncharted. For $499, the 160GB system will include the new 160GB system, a DUALSHOCK 3 controller, a voucher for PAIN and a copy of Uncharted. It will be available in November.

"As PLAYSTATION Network continues to evolve with our recently launched video delivery service and more exclusive games, PS3 owners are demanding more storage capacity," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "Consumers also are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive. The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand in a compelling bundle that delivers significant value."

SCEE President dates PlayTV for the UK

Eurogamer has learned from Sony Europe's David Reeves that PlayTV will debut in the UK on September 10th, with the rest of Europe getting the add-on "from September to December," while Australia and New Zealand will be joining in on the DVR fun in January or February. No word on pricing though, but Reeves previously stated the price would €99.

Even more exciting for Europeans, Aussies, and New Zealanders is that the digital video recorder add-on will allow users to record TV while simultaneously engaging in a game. Apparently there were some technical obstacles they had to overcome to achieve this, so kudos to Sony for that. Reeves states that the firmware needed for PlayTV was already included in update 2.41, "so in theory if your PS3 is up to date you're all set for the 10th September launch."

Of course, North Americans who use the ATSC digital standard will never see this, since PlayTV is a DVB-T tuner. We'd say if anything, this should bring some relieve to our PAL regions friends who are currently missing out on the PS Store video service.

2007 was a crazy year for the Xbox 360. There were tons of great games scattered all throughout the year in a number of genres. We have our picks for our Top Ten Xbox 360 Games of 2007 right here. There are some surprise games included, and some big name titles excluded, but that shows you how diverse and great the lineup this year really was

1. BioShock

2K Games BioShock is a great game. It is the best game that the Xbox brand, not just the Xbox 360, has ever seen, and will likely go down as one of the best games ever on any system. It is one of those rare games that combines not only amazingly polished graphics and sound, but very solid, deep, complex gameplay, a great story, and an overall feeling of immersion that sucks you in and keeps you playing that few other titles can match. BioShock is a must play game for Xbox 360 owners. Easily the best Xbox 360 game and best game overall of 2007.

2. Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft Assassin's Creed is one of the most intriguing, fresh, fun, and absolutely impressive games to come to the Xbox 360. The presentation is stunning and the gameplay will hook you and not let you go for hours at a time. It is not a perfect game by any means, but when you take your time to really experience everything the game has to offer rather than rushing through it, the flaws fade and the strengths shine even brighter. Assassin's Creed is a great game that is among the very best of 2007.

3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Activision So long World War II. Hello modern warfare! Call of Duty has made the leap from the heroics of the greatest generation to a horrifying vision of the future in CoD4, and the results are pretty darn spectacular. The single-player campaign is filled with tight gameplay and great moments you'll want to play again and again, and the multiplayer is some of the deepest and most satisfying around. Call of Duty 4 is a great game that is highly recommended. Read Review

4. Virtua Fighter 5

SEGA We kind of feel bad about the PS3 version of Virtua Fighter 5. It seems like SEGA doomed it from the start by first announcing the Xbox 360 version before the PS3 version was even out, and then a few months later revealing that the 360 version would have online play and other enhancements. Whatever SEGA's motives were regarding the two versions of VF5, the only important thing is that both games are great, but the Xbox 360 version is definitely the better of the two. This is one of the best fighting games ever and one of the best games of 2007.

5. Guitar Hero II / III / Rock Band

Activision 2007 saw the release of Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III, and Rock Band on the Xbox 360. Rather than choosing just one, I'm recommending all three. They all play pretty much the same and they all have great song lists, so picking one over the others is purely a matter of personal preference. Or, you can just get all three, which is what I really recommend.

6. Halo 3

Microsoft Halo 3 is the best Halo yet and one of the best games available on the Xbox 360. Every single aspect of the game is polished to near-perfection from the presentation to the campaign to the multiplayer, Halo 3 does everything amazingly well and adds in a bunch of new bells and whistles to really put it all over the top. And above all else, Halo 3 is one of the absolute best values in the industry. You will be playing this for months and likely years to come.

7. Overlord

Codemasters Overlord, from Codemasters and Triumph Studios, is an action RPG where you take on the role of an evil overlord who has control over hordes of vicious minions. Your main objective through the game is to destroy everything you come across, and if that doesn't sound fun, I don't know what is. It didn't get a lot of attention prior to its release, but I can happily say that Overlord is not only one of the great surprises from this Summer, but one of the best games of 2007 overall.

8. Forza Motorsport 2

Microsoft Forza Motorsport 2 is one of the most addictive and deeply satisfying racing games you will ever play. There is no greater feeling than when you tweak and tune your custom painted car for hours until it drives exactly how you want it. Or when you make a really nice custom graphic design and then it sells for a high amount in the auction house. Forza 2 is a great game that is accessible enough to appeal to a wide audience despite the fact racing sims are historically only for the hardcore. One of the best racing games on Xbox 360 and one of the best sim racers ever.

9. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

After a successful test run for RTS games on consoles with Battle for Middle Earth II, EA is back with another Xbox 360 real-time-strategy game. Only this time, it is one of the biggest and best franchises the genre has to offer, Command and Conquer. Fast and smooth gameplay, easy to learn controls, a cool storyline, nice graphics and sound, Command and Conquer 3 does pretty much everything right and it is highly recommended for Xbox 360 owners.

10. Crackdown

Microsoft Crackdown is likely to go down as "The game the Halo 3 Beta came with", but it deserves more recognition than that. Crackdown, or Riot Act as it is called in Japan, mixes GTA-****"sandbox" gameplay with special abilities you'd usually only find in a Marvel superhero to create a game that actually stands out among the increasing number of GTA wannabes. It looks gorgeous, plays amazingly well, and is one of the most addictive and satisfying games around. Crackdown is a fun game, especially in co-op, that stands as one of the best titles of 2007

10. Chessmaster: The Art of Learning
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft

No, we've not lost our minds. In fact, regular play of Chessmaster: The Art of Learning has arguably sharpened it, evidenced most clearly by its inclusion in this list. We like to think we cast our net wide when it comes to the kind of UMDs that slot into our drives and so make no apologies for selecting this over more the more 'conventional' choice of, say NfS ProStreet. There's a reason why quite a few people have been playing chess for quite a number of years and while Chessmaster is unlikely to please the grandmasters amongst you, those looking to find the attraction the game holds are unlikely to find a better introduction on PSP.
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami

It's easy to get complacent when it comes to the FIFAs and PESs of this world. Indeed, we often exclude them from our 'best game' Top 10s because they tend to maintain the kind of consistent quality that makes them safe bets for anyone looking for a handheld footy experience though not perhaps the most exciting indication of a format's evolution. But given the lower number of PSP releases than usual so far this year it seems unfair to ignore the extremely solid work Konami has done in bringing its latest PES creation to Sony's portable console. So here it is. 8. Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures
Developer: Traveller's Tales
Publisher: LucasArts

Such is the charisma exuded by the Lego incarnation of Indiana Jones that we probably wouldn't mind finding ourselves on the end of his whip. But that's possibly not the sort of thing we should be admitting in public. Besides, it's not just Indy; it's Han Solo and the forthcoming Bruce Wayne, too. The point is Traveller's Tales Lego games capture the essence of the Danish plastic toy within the framework of a video game admirably and while Lego Indiana Jones may not reinvent the gameplay first seen in Lego Star Wars, it doesn't stray from it either, resulting in an experience you'll savour from start to finish.
7. flOw
Developer: SuperVillain Studios
Publisher: Sony

And now for something completely different. It's easy to forget, when criticising the PSP for its lack of games, that the format already plays host to an impressively varied set of gaming experiences - and by this we're specifically referring to the more 'left-field' examples other platforms can't reach. To this list we can add flOw, whose mechanic of tasking you with guiding a microorganism through gorgeous colourful environments, munching on creatures smaller than you effortlessly transports players into a preciously rare zen-like state of gaming. You're unlikely to find a smoother experience on handheld.
6. Space Invaders Extreme
Developer: Taito
Publisher: Square Enix

What can a 30-year-old game teach other titles? Well, that with a little care and the right approach you can take ageing gameplay and tweak it significantly yet delicately to deliver an experience that will teach modern know-it-all efforts a thing or two about playability. Space Invaders Extreme takes the ****c 1978 template and delivers the finest sequel the franchise has ever enjoyed and is likely to be remembered as one of the best retro revamps. One can only imagine what they'll do to it in 30 years' time. 5. echochrome
Developer: Sony Japan
Publisher: Sony

The problem with coming up with something that isn't an entirely predictable film tie-in, a generic upgrade-laden racer, or a copycat first-person shooter is that no one will buy your innovative masterpiece. We don't know what the sales figures for echochrome are, but we suspect they're grossly unrepresentative of the excellence to be found in Sony's ingenious brain-taxing puzzler. You can almost picture Mr Average Gamer dropping his Need for Speed sandwich box upon sighting the monochrome, line-drawn screenshots on the back of the echochrome game case. But then the world is a far from fair place. 4. Fading Shadows
Developer: Ivolgamus
Publisher: Ivolgamus

Some things in life don't mix. Sulphuric acid and water come to mind. But marbles and platforming video game mechanics do, not least because when combined in the exceptionally imaginative way Ivolgamus has managed in Fading Shadows the result is one of the finest puzzle experiences on PSP. It may not benefit from the brand awareness or marketing campaign of even a medium-profile release but that just means you should be able to pick up this wonderfully unique and rewarding experience rather cheaply. 3. Patapon
Developer: Sony
Publisher: Sony

This can go one of two ways. You're either the type to hear of Patapon's rhythm-action, strategy and role-playing elements and immediately conjure up a game in your mind not dissimilar to the brilliance you'll find in Sony's absurdly charming effort. Or you're the kind of individual whose head will implode. If that's you, try to stop your cranium from caving in, somehow, because otherwise you'll find yourself missing out on one of the most innovative and enjoyable releases on PSP to date.
2. Everybody's Golf 2
Developer: Clap Hanz
Publisher: Sony

Anyone who fails to see the appeal of the Everybody's Golf games would have difficulty in convincing others that they really are human. They're exquisitely playable affairs, full of charm and boasting the kind of addictive, can't-leave-it-alone quality Amy Winehouse is all too familiar with. On PSP, this second round for the franchise comes in impressively under par with finely tuned game mechanics and goes on to score a hole-in-one with the inclusion of online play. If you're looking for the best golf game on Sony's handheld, you've found it.
1. God of War: Chains of Olympus
Developer: Ready At Dawn
Publisher: Sony

Yes, it's mostly mindless action. But it's also expertly done and is likely to be remembered as one of the finest, most polished and entertaining handheld examples of the genre ever crafted. Taking Kratos through a savage, blood-filled yet graphically phenomenal journey through Greek mythology in portable form proves as enjoyable as the two PlayStation 2 God of War titles that preceded this instalment. Don't think of it as a spin-off, though - Chains of Olympus is very much its own game and is likely to slice the aorta of anyone who disagrees wide open. Before going on to rip their arms from their sockets.
