I heard another interview with him in which he talked specifically about social psychology. The game's story is based on rearch into Hobbes, Rousseau, Smith, Nietzsche, Jung and Jane McGonigal's talks on gamification. So basically the game is all about social psychology. He also graduated cum laude from Yale, so I don't think he's bullshitting the science.
