i've tried a ton of games on vista, and most have worked just fine. system shock 2 gave me a little trouble, but there is a definite work around for that one. some games will have performance issues but from my experience they have been just fine for me.
i loved morrowind. it is not for everyone, though. the start of the game is a little slow because your character starts out really weak. but it's worth the work, in my opinion. the story is better and more engrossing. it's about 100 times more fun to explore, too. the environments are a lot more diverse. i would definitely give it a shot, but with the caveat that it isn't as accessible at the beginning as oblivion is. the payoff is a lot better though.
if you have to stay external, go with fire wire. on paper it has been labeled in the past as a little slower than usb 2.0, but actual file transfer times are lower with fire wire. if you were playing music on the external hdd, you wouldn't notice a huge difference between the two, but for games, fire wire will be a little faster than usb 2.0.
actually you could use the mouse to look in all directions in the original quake. you had to manually turn it on though with the +mlook command. duke3d had it too, i think, but it was pretty clunky. quake, at least, was the first one i used the mouse with.
i heard it's a problem with the wii itself. i cant find the link but it's somewhere on engadget...something from the last couple of days. 480i works fine but for a lot of people 480p isn't outputting a signal or something like that.
