There actually is a modification that lets you change the resolution in games like PS:T and BG2. Get it from http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen

Gemrb is an emulator for the Infinity Engine, so it's a bit advanced for "noobs", I'm afraid. Try the widescreen mod.
