@Djungelurban: When Snyder and Terrio were writing JL, they actually used Cyborg's connection to the Motherbox to make him a central character to the story and even had Fisher help them write his character. Fisher was very grateful for this since he's a black actor in his first Hollywood movie. Then when Whedon had to rewrite the movie, he removed this important storyline, in favor of the whole Russian family subplot which did not really matter to the story, and several scenes that either did not fit the rest of the movie (Martha and Lois having a sitcom conversation, Flash's power working differently for a joke) or downright offensive (the Flash-WW boob plant, which the actors protested against so Whedon filmed it with body doubles). Whedon himself has a history of poorly-written non-white characters, so obviously he's given the side-eye regarding this.
@Lord_Sesshy: He's a previously-unknown black actor. He has hinted that the BLM protests changing the discourse on black entertainers might have given him some courage to speak his mind.
@WarGreymon77: Whedon has been considered...... problematic for years, but mostly by women and feminists. Recently however, many people who worked on JL have thrown shade at him.
@stunningham: He praised Snyder and Terrio for having faith in a fresh black actor and even consulted him on how Cyborg should be played. You connect the dots from there.
@Djungelurban: Not, it's a black actor speaking up for how they're treated in Hollywood. Fisher called the Snyder Cut "unapologetically black", but most of Cyborg's story was removed from the Whedon version despite him being an important character.
This is just 1 of the many reasons I don’t feel sorry for Lucas feeling “betrayed” buy Disney. He betrayed the REAL fans who MADE him a millionaire buy doing this crap and refusing to change it back.
George Lucas is scum.
Rebel scum.
"Maclunkey" might be a threat in-universe, but in this scene it is a symbol of his heroic defiance against an Empire.
