If this is a bug, I honestly hope they decide to "patch" it via some kind of amazing quest line with loot to reward players that didn't take advantage of the option. It's a far more enjoyable solution that just fixing it and pretending it never was a thing and either letting those who took advantage keep their loot (and arguably unfair advantage) or take their runes (and xp) and upset the players.
