@wahsobe: I feel the way I do because I see a bad trend on how more and more companies want subscription services exclusive to them. It’s why there are too many TV options at premium monthly pay on top of cable and dish. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+, Amazon Prime…. And a lot more.

Ubisoft looks to be gearing up to do the same thing. Not looking forward to it. That’s my problem.

Yes, the X plays a lot of older games, but there are plenty NOT included such as Goldeneye, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, DJ Hero 2, and my copy of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (mine is the 360 version). All I’m saying is it’s nice. By getting another 360, I can enjoy these games again.

@Jarrkha: I don’t think I’m being ridiculous. I like being able to play online with what Gold offers while also enjoying Game Pass. It’s Ultimate, as you point out which includes EA.

My point was that I don’t like the trend of 3rd party companies now offering separate services to play their games. Remember when Netflix had Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Pixar movies? Do they still? Nope! Why? Because Disney+ came along which meant Netflix lost all Disney related material. I’m not a fan of gaming going the same way. And now, if you wanna see Toy Story, you need Disney+. Daredevil is nowhere to be found (except on dvd and BluRay).

Options: ownership, longevity, and the ability to play what I want, when I want even if it’s offline. Sure, certain games have online multiplayer and other options, but I don’t want to be limited in what or how I enjoy my game(s) beyond my own limitations that I accept. Case in point; yes, Game Pass is an amazing deal and allows such a wide variety of games, but Microsoft takes games away from the service each month. Also, they can dump any game, anytime they like without explanation. Own the disc and sidestep the hassle.

You make some good points. But I want to exercise my options as I see fit. What I’m not willing to do is pay more than I already do because Ubisoft wants to make a service that will, no doubt, take games away from a service that currently offers them and then wants me to pay them more than I already do. No thanks.

By the way, I do Ultimate… I just didn’t specify Ultimate as I should have. It covers Game Pass and Gold which are two services combined into Ultimate. Thank you for pointing that out. That was my bad.

No. No. No.

I pay for GamePass, Xbox Live Gold, PSN, PlayStation Now, and Nintendo Online Service. There is no way in hell I am going to pay Ubisoft or EA or any other 3rd party company individually.

The same thing has happened with TV. Netflix and Hulu were great. But now, we have Amazon Prime, Disney+, Paramount, Fox Nation, and a myriad of others. I don’t do it with TV and I’m sure as HELL not going to do it with games.

You know, this is why physical media beats out digital. We have options and can play what we want, when we want. Shame on EA and UbiSoft for pulling this on us. Neither company have put anything out worth owning, anyway; not in the last 3 years.

I just replaced a bricked Xbox 360 and can now enjoy games I haven’t been able to play in years because my Xbox One X won’t recognize them. I’m thinking of going back to the 360 and PS3 over the Series X and PS5. At least I’ll have control over my own games and won’t have to pay a yearly fee for games I’ve already bought.

Screw UbiSoft! Screw EA!

Halo Anniversary was a good practice run for 343. It helped them get their feet wet and reafied the team to make Halo 4. I think they did a great job amd made the right choices in order to meet their schedudled anniversary release date. Good job, 343.

A well written article. I can understand publishers trying to make a buck but I agree that punishing the consumer is not the way to do it. I still say a price point of $59.99 is too much for most games out there. This is a large reason why I buy used and have become more and more selective of the titles I buy. I want a game to be worth the price of admission. And let's face it, most games aren't nowadays. We are already nickle and dimed on DLC which is outrageous. Publisehrs are releasing more and more games that are half finished only to make us pay more than we already do for the complete experience. I pay Microsoft for Xbox Live and I am not interested in giving these guys more money when gas is $4.00 a gallon. The economy sucks right now so if publishers either raised the level of quality level or lowered the costs of their titles, then I'd be more inclined to buy new. Being forced to pay an extra premium for online content that I also have to buy is awful. Tom Magrino is right; I'm inclined to skip a lot of titles altogether if these fees keep up. A much better business model is Steam. Look at the deals you can get on titles that way. And the revenue that Steam generates is second to none on the PC market. If I had that kind of access on the PS3 or 360, then my gaming collecting habits would increase immensely.

@Overminer Thank you for making such a retraction. I know it can become quite annoying dealing with fanboys. I understand your frustration. It was good fo you to take back some of the things you said. Wishing ill upon anyone is always wrong. That said, fanboys should not attack PS3 owners because their system of choice's network was attacked. It is nothing to make fun of. People who own a PS3 only want to play their games. They, like all players (PC, Wii, or Xbox Live) deserve to have their information and identities protected. It is a shame people would take this opportunity to attack fellow gamers just for having a preference for one system over another. I still agree with you, Overminer. Fanboys should be quiet about all this. But I also thank you for taking back the thought of wishing the same upon them. You are a better person than that, as we all should aspire to be in kind.

@Overminer I'm sorry but I have to disagree. Not with your feelings but with the way you went about making your point. Maybe you think fanboys should shut up and I agree with that. But to wish something like this disaster on other people who have been lucky enough to avoid it is just cruel. I am on both PSN and Xbox Live. My info has been compromised and I am worried about it. I show no favoratism. My only concern is that all people involved can be protected and the people responsible are held accountable for their actions. As for those lucky enough to avoid all this, perhaps they should not rub it in anyone else's face and they should also be more sensitive to those it has affected. But I do not wish something like this on anyone else. Bottom line, we are all gamers and we should not wish ill upon each other, no matter which system we favor.

The analogies and colloquialisms used in this article are boring, distracing, unfunny, and irritating. What a piece of crap opinion piece. There is nothing clever about it. I kept thinking, "get to the freaking point," the whole time I was reading it.

First off, it is ridiculous to claim that Nintendo isn't in competition with Sony or Microsoft. The bottom line is always system sales. Each company wants to out sell the others and it is all according to features that are offered and available software. Nintendo offers a unique experience with its gaming, as does Microsoft with Xbox Live. Whichever company offers the experience the consumer wants, that's the company that will sell the most. Nintendo is in competiton, make no mistake. Next, while Nintento has innovated they have also remained stuck in the past. It is only now that Nintendo realizes that online gaming is for real. Hell, it isn't even the future. Online gaming is the present and Nintendo has yet to nurture that area of the market. They stuck with cartridges when everyone was moving to CDs, they refused to offer DVD playback on the Gamecube and the Wii, and they still have yet to get into HD. I like what I'm hearing about Nintendo and the possibilities they potentially have to offer. But they have to step it up and get with the times. Grandma has her Wii. She's not going to spend another $200-$300 for another system. Parents will buy it for their kids, no doubt. But if Nintendo doesn't get current, then their innovations will be left with what has seemed to be their insistant mindset; the past.

The 3DS just might be too expensive to justify. The hardcore gamer will jump at it, sure. But your average parent in this harsh of an economy will be hesitant, especially with a hefty price tag added on for each game. I'm thinking $249.99 and $49.99 for system and games. For a handheld, this is simply too high. The handheld market isn't strong enough to carry something this expensive in the USA. Nintendo might just be biting off more than it can chew here.
