I would have put Hard Boiled in the top spot. The level of action John Woo was able to create for a film with a budget of only 4.5 million is simply incredible.
I'd give an honorable mention to D'vorah's fatality where she exhales a swarm of flies into the victim's mouth only to then have arachnoid-like legs exploding from the chest and to have an insectoid head burst out from the victim's head.
Super Metroid deserves the top spot, but Metroid Prime's level of immersion was incredible. One of the most memorable gaming experiences I ever had was reaching the icy Phendrana Drifts in Metroid Prime. After spending hours trying to find a way beyond the fiery underground cave with hellish music, the sight of a serene and icy landscape combined with a heavenly sound was simply a beautiful thing to witness.
The first act was engaging and kept me guessing what was going to happen. Once they talk about Zion and the bloated lore from Reloaded and Revolutions, it started to fall apart. The movie would have worked much better without acknowledging those sequels.
@notafan: It's weird to say this, but I really have a fondness for the Mortal Kombat franchise and it's not because of the violence. Sure, the fatalities were like the coolest thing when I was growing up in the 90s, but what kept me interested in it is that it's pretty much the only western gaming franchise that still draws a heavy influence from Chinese culture. As a person of Chinese ethnicity but having spent most of my life in North America, something about Mortal Kombat's lore and influences resonate with me.
I'm a long-time fan of the series and will always be a fan due to its interesting lore and epic story, but I grew out of the excessive violence. Friendship is a welcoming addition and a good change of pace from all the fatalities.
Still arguably the best video game-to-film adaptation even after 25 years; that's why it's a movie that is still fairly often talked about to this day and the games do not shy away from making reference from the movie.
