Seriously. I'm curious.
I played The Darkness back in '07 when it was released through a rental, and I loved it. I never got around to buying it until just recently, and I've been mildly obsessed with it lately. It holds up amazingly well, and I've had more fun with this than any game I played in the 2013 release year. Some things look dated, I won't argue that, but gameplay, exploration, narrative, voice acting, and characters are all extremely well done and still hold up.
Given the fact that it's as overlooked as it is these days since gaming kind of blew up around the year this was released with Bioshock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, etc., this kind of got buried in that release year. Which, those are all great games, but I really do think The Darkness deserves a second look from a lot of gamers.
I'm honestly curious if there are any other like-minded people out there who still play this game on a regular-enough basis and consider it a masterpiece/hidden gem. It's easily my favorite comic book adaptation game of all time, for sure. With a statement like that, considering all the standout games in that niche, I think this game has a somewhat "timeless" factor to it, for lack of a better word. Honestly, I don't see myself ever getting tired of it. It's so different for what it is.
The Darkness II was fun and all, but it really lacked in atmosphere compared to this one, and was much different in tone. I liked it and all, it just didn't have that "special" feeling that this one had. A good game, but the first is an amazing game, IMO.
