The Last of Us

Hands-down, my favorite game ever. It's emotional, has great characters, wonderful story, amazing combat, and an atmosphere that's tense and hopeful at the same time.

2

Xenogears

The most engaging and epic RPG I've played in all my life. Wonderful characters, deep and complex plot, engaging combat mechanics, and an incredible art style land this puppy right up there.

3

Shadow of the Colossus

As games go, this one is pretty unorthodox. But the sheer enjoyment of taking down 16 beasts while feeling the emotional weight of the act is too much to ignore.

4

Metroid Prime

An amazing game that focuses on exploration rather than combat (though it's there and it's amazing), has visuals and animations that are still tough to beat, and one of the most gripping storytelling methods ever.

5

Mega Man X

An action game unlike any other. The blue bomber got an upgrade, and it made things faster, tougher, and all around exciting.

6

Heavy Rain

Another unorthodox "game" that utilizes quick time events to tell a gripping story. And it works amazingly well. Some will hate, I will love.

7

BioShock

Truthfully, this should be both BioShock and BioShock Infinite. Both games have these things that I love: great story, excellent gunplay, wonderful atmosphere, and amazing characters. I honestly can't pick between the two in terms of which one I like better, so they both should be included as a tie.

Dragon Age: Origins

One of the best RPGs I've ever played. Not just for the deep combat mechanics, but for the amazing cast of characters you get to bond with, along with the amazing lore behind this world.

9

Red Dead Redemption

A thrill ride from beginning to end. Great mechanics, a massive open world to explore, and one of the most engaging stories ever produced all make this game one of my favorites.

Dark Souls

This game is brutally hard, but I'll be damned if I'm not enjoying the punishment. Incredible mechanics, a deep and mysterious lore, and some of the most fearsome enemies ever created give me the challenge of a lifetime--and I couldn't love it any more.
