Games have the potential to be the best storytelling medium yet. Why? Because they allow the players to actually affect the storyline. Unfortunately nowadays, not many developers put enough effort into the story. If they focused on the story as much as theyre focusing on the graphics, video games would be a whole lot better and much more fun experience. When I look into the past and reminisce about the games I have played, I dont think I can recall more than five games that had a decent storyline (decent - as in better than in most of the B class movies). The truth is that most video games, no matter how great their graphics or gameplay is, are wasting their potential. I am not saying that gameplay or graphics arent important or less important than the story. I actually think that there is no way a great story (in a game, of course) will attract the gamers if it doesnt have decent graphics or gameplay. Thats what books are for (just the story, no additional elements). Game developers need to try and make the story as important as other aspects of the game. For example, in The Witcher, a game made by a Polish developer no one has heard of before (CD Projekt), all the elements making a great game are combined, resulting in a mature storyline, great graphics and a truly awesome gameplay with innovative combat system. Unfortunately, CD Projekt failed in translating the game to other languages. Since my native language is Polish, that was no problem to me, but I can imagine how many gamers across the world must have felt, getting a great game they could barely understand, because of little effort put into translating it. Of course, brainless games are also needed, simply because they are a lot of fun and let the player chill out after a hard day or something. But they shouldnt be a majority on the game market. When I get a new game, I expect something that will keep me interested until I see the final credits. What is a better way to achieve it, than making the games story interesting, combining it with addictive gameplay, and decorating it with beautiful graphics?
