The iPhone game space is starting to get crowded and desparately needs some good critical oversight. In addition, there are starting to be several ports (SimCity, PuzzleQuest, Katamari, etc).
This console is more of a family console than any other in history. Nintendo doesn't want some 6 year old to play with some adult spouting obsceneties the whole time and I don't blame them. The unfortunate truth of online gaming in any form is that the 'human element' usually turns out to be negative in the form of griefing or an insult, thats why there's that disclaimer on every online game "Experience may change during online play". Nintendo is just trying to control that experience so that they can ensure it is family friendly.
Also, I highly doubt any 6 year olds are going to be posting their opinions here, so the representation of this issue is a tad skewed towards the hardcore gamer ;)
