Yeah, you can play BIV without playing the others, each game is it's own thing.

You could say Dragon Quest IX is kinda bland, but it requires excellent skill & health managing, it's not like you can just mash the button to attack.(Maybe on early enemies).

Well... as I heard someone describe it, Disgaea is Final Fantasy Tactics on Crack. The gameplay is way more complicated and has a lot of variables to consider in a stage. Also funny as hell.

If you want a game more similar to Fire Emblem, you should try Advance Wars(GBA).
