Ok so I am trying to update my family's pc. I have a good rig, but my sister wants to play sims 2 etc. on the older pc so we got a cheap Asus HD 4670 to run on the family computer.

The OS is Windows Vista 32bit. The old card was in the X1300 series; almost the worst you can have. And yes its a dell.

So I have uninstalled the old drivers in the control panel add/remove programs section. Then I downloaded Driver Sweeper, and it removed all the old drivers in safe mode. Then, when I reboot the pc, everything is all big, the resolution is bad, the icons are huge...I'm guessing, looking under device manager, that I'm using the integrated graphics on the MOBO.

When I insert the disc for the new card's drivers, windows can't recognise the disc. I can't get the new drivers installed because it won't even launch the disc. Is that because I need to disable integrated graphics first...or what?

I am pretty sure the GPU is installed correctly. Its a Dell, so the clip system will not lock unless its in correctly. EDIT: the fan is also spinning. It also draws all the power from the PCI-E slot.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Ok thanks jt you've been a great help. I'll pick one up as that article points to it lowering temperature by about 18 degrees. I think I'm sorted now but feel free to add anything if you think I've overlooked anything.

Ok I'll go for the Coolermaster HAF.

I was going to OC the CPU from 2.66hz to 3ghz so should I pick up a Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V Heat Sink and Fan? (this is looking a little like your pc :P)

Well things are more versatile then I made out: when I said I had the 5750 I lied and meant I'll have it by this weekend. So when I go into my hardware store I'll get the 5770.

The reason I'm putting the 5770 over any of the 4,000 models is directx11 suppourt and the fact when new drivers are released and updated, it supposedly will be faster than the early 4,00 models. In my opinion the step up from a 700 model to an 800 model isn't worth the price jump considering the marginal increase in performance. I'd rather wait 4 years and buy another card in the high end category then spend a lot on a very high end card now.

Thanks for the advice on the dvd drive: I'm not too fussed about Blu-Ray so I'll get a fast DVD drive for cheaper and throw in A Blu-Ray drive when it becomes the norm.

The tower case is quite a lot more expensive. However, I'm tempted to buy one assuming that is I won't need to bother with any cooling on top of what it already has. I also like the size increase: just in case cards in the future get bigger. If I get the Coolermaster, will I need CPU cooling?

Finally just wondering if I'm missing anything. I'd hate to order all the components and start building only to realise somwthing is missing. Any wires or extras I need to get started?

Hey I know making 2 threads at once is somewhat taboo so I hope you don't mind.

Just before I buy this thing was wondering whether anyone would make any changes. It comes to $1700 but I have the PSU and GPU already so that means I'm paying $1400 off www.aria.com because I live in the UK.

Case: Antec 300

Mobo: Asus P6DT Deluxe Intel x58 DDR3

CPU: Intel Core i7-920

RAM: Corsair DDR3 1600MHZ 6GB

OS: Windows 7

GPU: HD570 1GB

PSU: OCZ 600W

HDD: Samsung 1TB F3 SATA 2 7200RPM 32MB CACHE

Drive: Lite-On 4x Internal Blu Ray BD-ROM SATA

Is there any other upgrade I should make that is worth it in terms of money...let's say money isn't TOO much of an issue (another $300 could work out ok)

Well things are a bit more expensive over in England. I have the PSU and GPU already so it comes to $1400. Which is a lot but I want it to last a good while and I think this works well. I think I'll stick to the RAM choice.

I'll make a seperate post to check if anyone's got any final thoughts on things. Cheers mate

Well I'm too busy to bother with a holiday this year so money is not so much the issue; therefore if i get your:

ASUS P6TD Deluxe - motherboard - ATX - iX58

And:

Corsair Dominator-GT memory - 6 GB ( 3 x 2 GB ) - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3

Then that would be o.k. because this MOBO suppourts 3 layered/levelled/whatever it was called.
