"Think of Xbox as the service, and we just happen to also make a console."

Well if that is the case Sony offers a better service and they offer it free with the console. The Playstation 3 was the number one netflix streaming device last year. Combine that with blu ray and other video services and the average consumer is more likely to purchase a PS3. If microsoft is trying to make the xbox and entertainment brand it is too late they already lost. Keep the focus on gaming and only gaming, cause thats were the heart of your customers are.

I really do not mind the linearity of the more recent final fantasies. In FFX case they made a really great game with excellent story. FFXIII failed cause it was also linear but the story sucked, or at least they did not tell it very well. I am fine with playing on a set path as long as its interesting. In FFX I wanted to find out what happens next and between finding out the next plot twist you were finding out about the characters to keep you going. 13 had too many times where it would be hours of meaningless irrelevant banter between characters before something interesting happened. On a side note I think final fantasy 12 was perfect in terms of its balance between Freedom and Story. After any long sequence of being stuck in an airship or mine shaft you always had the chance to go and do whatever you wanted, regardless of how pressing the main story line was.

@WCK619 its not about being cost effective its about delivering on a quality product. That said I dont think it is that inefficient. For the associates at gamestop to test and clean every console that is traded in their store would require more ( probably many more) hours to run their operation. The people who work their and refurbish the games/consoles can do it better and faster than in store. Is it the cheapest way possible? absolutely not, but you get what you pay for. If you do not want to pay more for a guaranteed product then do not go to gamestop.
