Splinter Cell is a stealth game, and in my experience most of the encounters can be overcome the first time around if you just move with stealth and observe the situation before you rush in. The games do a pretty good job of letting you see the enemies and learn their movement pattern before you enter a certain space. Oh, and Splinter Cell uses two layers of AI. When they don't know you're around they will use a predictable pattern of movement (allowing you to sneak past.) Once they become alert, they will move to logical cover or search points, depending on where they THINK you are. They are not automatically "told" where you are. If they spend some time searching for you without finding you, they will revert back to their patrolling behavior, and you can continue sneaking past. And PoP is definetely not trial and error, in the traditional sense. Some times it may take a few tries to get the coordination right, but that's why the game gives you the ability to rewind time, so you don't have to reload. Again, most of these games can be played pretty much straight through without much problems. Have to agree with the stuff about the guards in Far Cry, though... Ick.
