Totally depends on difficulty, really. I'm working on my hardcore playthrough right now and have put about 5 hours in and am only on maybe the 5th chapter?
If you run it on normal/hard I'd say a good 12-14 hours or so.
I think all the guns are pretty good, aside from the shotguns I guess (personal preference) but I think my favorite is definitley the auto 9mm. I don't know why but I feel like it is just headshot town whenever I use it.
I had the same issue, but I found out you can disable the laser mode on the weapon, reverting it to a basic reticile weapon. Check your controls menu to find out how.

Great tip, I was wondering if there was any way to do this since the laser sighted weapons are really hard to aim properly.
To answer your question : your EMS (effective military strengh) was low (upgrading Normandy in ME 2 affects also the ending) and...sadly u killed them all.if u EMS jumps over 3k u can save ppl but u ravage earth,if it is over 4k 8k is ideal u save everything no matter what u chose,but shep lives only on destroy ending withm EMS 8k.

Well, I didn't upload an ME2 save b/c those saves were on an Xbox that fried. This was my second playthrough (insanity) and I didn't bother with a lot of the side missions.
To be perfectly honest I don't remember the first playthrough I did where I did all of the N7 missions and side quests etc, being any different of an ending than when i got the second time.
Ok so I decided to destroy all synthetics at the end, and after the scene where Joker is frantically racing through mass relays trying to avoid the blast you see the normandy crashed into a field on some planet.
