In the world of competitive gaming anything that can provide an advantage over your opponent is usually met with great enthusiasm and secrecy. The same holds true when it comes to the benefits gained on the battlefield while using a new product called The Gamescope.

Joshua Swenn a young Atlanta Inventor has found a way to increase the magnification of any in-game reticule with his Multi-Zone Lens (MZL) that safely attaches and removes from any video screen for purpose of increasing the size of each pixel and thereby creating larger targets.

The Idea:

It was early 2011 and I was playing MW2 with a friend Michael. I remember taking aim at a far away target that had was concealed in a bush. The only true indication was that his rifle was poking out the front, but his head was hidden by leaves and branches. A lethal shot would require a bit more magnification so I could distinguish what is bush and what is target. As I scanned for movement I thought about how just a little more magnification may allow for a precision shot instead of blind firing into a bush.

Such a device would have to safely attach and detach to the screen and be ready for targets far and near. Immediately I grabbed a piece of paper and began drawing. I recall searching the Internet for other people's ideas but nothing really resembling what I wanted to build. I was not interested in sunglasses or stick-on reticles, "I wanted to use a true optical system for gaming in a manner that resembled and functioned in a manner true to authentic marksmen optics."

The Design:

The GameSc(o)pe: Precision Gaming Optical System, is designed to bring the benefits of combat optics to the virtual battlefield.
The bi-focal lens combines the rapid acquisition capabilities of reflex sights with the precision capabilities of high power optics.

The "Reflex Zone" is the outer portion of the lens that slightly enhances the image for rapid target acquisition. As the target moves toward the center it will become larger and appear closer.

The "Precision Zone" in the center is highly magnified and will greatly increase the size of the target for a more precise shot.

How does the GameScope work?

In video games, to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface, an object that is distant will be displayed very small. As the object gets closer to the viewer, it will become larger and will appear to be moving closer. The magnification properties of the GameScope enlarges the image underneath to make it seem closer and allows for enhanced shot placement.

For those working the angles in close quarter combat, having a reliable point of aim in the form of the reticle is vital to acquiring targets quickly. Occasionally the in-game reticle is difficult to see or is not there at all making target rapid acquisition difficult. The GameScope reticle is specifically designed and tested to balance visibility with subtension image blocked by reticle for optimal performance.

T.A.P:

Engagements can happen in an instant and be ended by one well placed shot. Our research has concluded that by enhancing 3 key skills of competitive gaming, users can experience higher success and greater enjoyment on the Virtual Battlefield. In the competitive atmosphere fractions of a second and a few pixels can be the difference between a kill or a respawn. Use a GameScope to acquire targets faster and with greater accuracy.

What are the "3 elements" of competitive gaming?

I use the acronym T.A.P which stands for: Twitch, Awareness, and Precision

Twitch refers to the motion player make in response to a sudden event on the screen. By having a reliable reticle on screen at all times users can "snap" onto the intended targets more consistently than with in-game reticles.

Awareness is the ability of the gamer to assess the battlefield and make intelligent decisions. While scanning the screen for targets the GameScope is easy for the eye to locate and provides for minimal sub-tension or blockage that reduces the time between target acquired and target down.

Precision is the users ability to place shots at intended locations. The added magnification will make the target appear larger and therefore easier to hit.

Whether you are a casual gamer or a core-gamer increasing your T.A.P will result making you a Precision Gamer. Better quality shots and improved battlefield effectiveness will lead to more kills, better K/D ratios, and ultimately more fun.
