No its not and its obvious you have not gamed on a PC. Controller support is not guaranteed and is a hassle. If you want to game with a controller hassle free, consoles wins hands down. But lets not pretend that you are trying to be objective. :)
Absolute nonsense. It's guaranteed with input mappers and it's very easy to do. You can map any key on the keyboard to a controller thanks to input mapper.
Go back to the early 2000s with your dated excuses.
It isn't as clean as you think in all the games.
What games are you playing that it isn't clean?
It works for me in all my games even extremely old PC games like Virtual On that don't have proper controller support. I was able to get them to work on my PS4 controller with an input mapper and it took me less than 10 minutes to learn how to do so. It's even easier if I use my X1 controller.
As easy as input mapping can be on PC I would give the "Guaranteed controller support" point to consoles. I game almost exclusively on my pc and I remember some games have given me problems, even Rocket League sometimes has issues with the controllers and I have to reboot my computer for them to work. And let's be honest, as good as you are setting up Input mapping software it isn't as straight forward as you're making it up to be, and even if you're not making that up, we all know that won't be the case for every other person.
Soo...
Getting back to the topic. I, as many others have said already don't see a reason (from us gamers point of view) to not have cross-play between all the platforms. There's people saying that it hasn't been necessary all these years of online gaming but while not necessary I like to think of it more as the next step in multiplayer gaming. Just imagine the possibilities: Platform vs Platform Leaderboards, Playlists in which a team of xbox players can play against ps4 players (or any other platform against other platforms), and so many more possibilities. Also, the thing about the online population of a game is something that actually happens a lot, Titanfall died pretty fast but if it had cross-play it would probably have lived at least a little longer. I actually fear for the new Soul Calibur game on PC, I fear the high population won't last very long (I hope I'm wrong because I will probably buy that game).
I agree that the main reason Sony doesn't want to allow this is because of what other guy said in here, which is the scenario where most of your friends could be playing on ps4 (which according to console sales, is the most likely to happen) and the only way to play with them is buying the same console. It makes sense (for Sony) to not want to share their user base because that would eliminate this scenario and thus they would lose this advantage.
But gamers taking the side of the company seems ridiculous to me, we are the ones who would actually lose if Sony somehow "won" the system wars and created some kind of monopoly (we know there's still nintendo and pc but but they are more kind of an indirect competition). The competition between Sony and Xbox is what keeps them trying to give us better games, services and features in general. I think it goes as far as forcing them give us other reasons to buy their console instead of the "I have to buy the same console as my friends if I want to play with them" scenario.
