To fully agree with your point, prior to any gun control measures, the public would have to have had full access to the same millitary hardware (tanks, aircraft carriers, drones, AA missles) . So even with automatic weapons which admitedly "do make people dead very good" any future plans to overthrow the goverment means your still outguned....just a tad.

I will at least answer this with factual historical information without any need to draw political opinion into it. I don't unconditionally trust politicians, what I know for a fact is that this is in NO way the first of any such research done on the subject and the result is always the same, no link with real violence and games. I have faith in that and any biased study will fall apart under scrutiny as others have in the past. The only actual trust I have here is in is the logical, rational members of the gaming community .

I don't see this as a truly bad thing. The research is not going to establish any links we all know that and Video Games will be publicly exonorated and the NRA will be shown as the scapegoating dummies they are. Placing the pressure back, exactly where it should be on Assault weapon advocates who believe legislation drafted in the time of blackpoweder firearms and swords, gurantees them the right to bear modern, fully automatic, millitary weapons.
