PlayStation 3 has 1% return rate

PlayStation 3 has 1% return rate

Added on 04/07/2007.While retailers reckon that 33% of 360 owners are plagued with the Red Ring of Death (or 3 Red Lights of Doom), only 1% of PS3 owners are returning faulty consoles.

An EB games associate said to Ripten: "Failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for EB to consider revising their policies. Most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3."

The 360, although selling well, is becoming (in)famous for not only giving up the ghost after the warranty expires, but also scratching discs if not being careful. The PS3 has not been plagued with any recurring problems, and the retailers' figures seem to support this.

So the PS3 may be more expensive, but at least you will only have to buy one.

Stay tuned.

Blu-ray heading to 360

Rumor: Blu-ray heading to 360

Added on 13/05/2007.During a recent interview in Japan, Peter Moore told reporters that Blu-ray could be heading to 360.

IT Media was informed by Moore that the 360 will see a Blu-ray add on, similar the to the HD-DVD add-on, before Christmas. The drive will give 360 owners the power of viewing Blu-ray disc movies much like the PS3. No announcement was made on whether or not Blu-ray games will be playable, but given Microsoft's stance on HD-DVD games, playable Blu-ray titles are highly unlikely.

The only question is, can the 360 support Blu-ray as well as the PS3? Sony and Microsoft each adopted either Blu-ray and HD-DVD respectively, in hopes of creating a new standard format. Moore said that the hopes of HD-DVD becoming the standard are now "bleak."

The PS3 was completely built around Blu-ray which gave the format the upper hand over HD-DVD in delivering high definition movies to as many homes as possible. Moore insisted that "Microsoft is giving the consumers the most cutting edge technology out there and in this moment in time Blu-Ray is that."

He added "that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since it uses an external drive."

The question remains: can the 360 repeat the PS3's success as a Blu-ray player, especially as the Premium Xbox 360 has no HDMI output.

Guitar Hero now playable on PS3

Guitar Hero now playable on PS3

Added on 12/05/2007.With backwards compatability issues nearly a moot point for Japanese and North American PS3 owners, one series desperately needed to make the jump to PS3. Guitar Hero 1 and 2 haven't been playable on the system. When starting up the game, you're prompted to press the PS button. Seeing as the Guitar Hero controller doesn't have a PS button, it wasn't really playable on a PlayStation 3, even using a PS2/PS3 controller adapter.

The Pelican PS2/PS3 adaptor finally emulates that PS button, allowing for your favorite guitar-smashing series to be playable on the PS3. The $15 adaptor provides perfect compatability with the first installment, but Guitar Hero 2 won't have those hammer on/offs that everyone loves so much.

Nothing perfect, but this comes pretty close.

Relentless talks PS3 development

Relentless talks PS3 development

Added on 12/05/2007.

British studio Relentless Software is the latest game developer to discuss the shift from the PlayStation 2 to the PlayStation 3, calling the move "a strange journey". During the interview with developmag.com, the company's founder Andrew Eades, said that although developers did not expect making games for Sony's next-gen console to be "a walk in the park", they "found it harder than [they] should have" and that only recently is the console starting to reveal its true power.

"We had some missteps in the art **** and that slowed us down - we were a bit worried at first but now it looks like a true next-gen game. Now we've got in place everything we need - with the right technical people and art people - and PS3 is starting to reveal its power to us," he said.

His statements should come as no surprise to gamers, as it is not unusual for developers to take some time get used to a new console, and only release games which make use of the console's true power long after launch.

However, despite any shortcomings they might have initially had, co-founder David Amor praised Sony for making the transition easier- "PS3 is quite a complicated machine to write for," he said, "but PlayStation Edge is a great help. I remember when I spoke to the Media Molecule guys, one of them said to me 'the Insomniac guys, they've cracked the SPUs, they got it.' So now those tools are available for third-party studios, it's good news for all of us.

Analyst predicts PS3 over Wii and Xbox 360

Analyst predicts PS3 over Wii and Xbox 360

Added on 29/03/2007.Having recently released its latest masterpiece, Sony is pleased to announce its PS3 as a success, declaring that early sales are faster than its predecessor the PS2. Despite early setbacks preventing the originally planned global launch of the console, the PS3 is now fully available due to increased product flow from the company, with one million consoles stocking shops in Europe from day one.

NDP figures show it to be selling slightly faster in the US than the Xbox 360 did at the same stage in its release. Paul O'Donovan, principal analyst at Gartner, is fully aware that the Wii is currently outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3 but still expects the "PS3 to outsell Wii and 360 by the end of 2007"

With millions of consumers finally satisfying their anticipation for the PlayStation 3 and such strong competition from Nintendo's and Microsoft's own next generation consoles it will be an exciting wait to see if such a bold statement will hold true.

I would have to agree with this as well...

"Having broken the record for launch sales, we are now replenishing retail stock across the country, " Ray Maguire, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, said.

We will keep you updated on the official PlayStation 3 sales figures.

Looks like the PS3 is doing just fine.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Ninja Gaiden Sigma runs at 1080p@60fps.

Added on 27/03/2007. An interview with Yosuke Hayashi, director of Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PlayStation 3, revealed some new details on their upcoming game.

Firstly, Hayashi revealed Ninja Gaiden Sigma with run at the full-HD resolution, 1080p, with a constant 60 frames per second. The game will also utilize realtime self-shadowing.

Secondly, he revealed the game will also have an online leaderboard for your score, with detailed statistics on how you have played.

Hayashi also stated that they would love to implement PlayStation Home into the game, but so far Sony didn't provide any tools. So that would cause delays for the game itself, and that's not what we want.
